All I can say is wow! I have been test driving various cars including an EVO X, STi, Acura TL, Infiniti G35, Mugen Civic and e46 M3 to replace my e60 M5 as my daily driver when its lease expires in a few months. Now that I have driven the new 135i, my search may be over. It is faster and handles better than the e46 M3 and can be bought for less than $40k...I only wish it seated 5 as I will have to sell my wife on a 4 seater as my daily driver...if you are looking for a new car, the 135i is worth considering if a 4 seat coupe meets your needs...

I am pretty sure there is a Top Gear comparo of the 135 and the VW R32.

WOW!! Going from a monster V10 to a 6, you think that you are gonna miss the extra 270 horsepower? You gonna lease the new car too or are you gonna go down the purchase path with this one? I like the looks of the 135 but I don't think I could live with how small it is. When my current lease is up I will be entertaining offerings from Germany...so, we'll see.

Heavier than the 3 series according to R&T IIRC... Over priced vs the 3 series as well, IMHO.

I agree. Although, I believe the 1er is actually a bit lighter than the 3er. But only by ~200lbs. Which is kind of sad.

I think you should be able to get one fully spec'd for no more than $35K. Unfortunately that's not the case, and BMW should have worked on pricing it cheaper. But they obviously researched their pricing strategy before hand.

I do like them the more I see them. I think I prefer the hatchback in Europe though. I do think the dash looks really good. Sort of remeniscent of the e46 dash. That's what my wacky eyes see anyway.

Would you get 6spd or auto? What color?

someone recently dyno'ed a 135i, and it came in at 334 @ the flywheel. so it seems that it is also following suit with BMW's conservative claims for the 335i when it came out. corrected power was still lower than most E46 M's, so it seems that it may not be as efficient. It's still an impressive little car, though. I'm not in love with the rear styling, but the rest of the car looks decent. Interior is nice -- at least, nicer than the E90/92. I absolutely hate the new dash...it cheapens the car, especially the new M3.

i think the 135i plus a chip and exhaust, putting it near 400bhp (or over) would be fun as hell for a daily.

From what I recall, the M5 weighs about 4,100lbs and has 500bhp vs the 135i weight of approx 3,400lbs and 300bhp. 0-60mph of both cars is pretty much on par with each other.

been looking for an everyday driver myself and have been looking at everything from Benz, Audi, Bimmer, Infiniti and Acura. Acura and Infiniti have as low as 0.9 interest on purchase or lease in our zipcode. anyhow, went to BMW, i know it is speculative but i loved the 135 in person....meaty stance, fat tires, great looks but instantly left the dealer when all 3 cars on the lot had a sticker price of $45k! i'm sure it is a helluva car but come on, seriously! i think BMW's got a great product here but missed the point and the audience it's intended to attract.

    http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/cars/used-cars/cr-recommended/the-best-worst-used-cars-406/overview/index.htm

I saw this article that was a list of the most reliable cars (recent production models, they did not say how far back that went) and least reliable cars according to Consumer Reports.

The ONLY BMW to make the "most reliable" list was the (E46) M3!! Considering the M3 is BMW's most high-strung car this is a shocker.

No BMW made the least reliable list luckily, it was filled mostly with American products and VW's. I have not had any issues with my 02 M3 in the 11 months I have owned it (and I've put on just over 20,000 miles in that 11 months!) so there must be a lot of others like me...

exactly. if they were going to price it almost exactly the same as a 335i, they shouldn't have made the 135i altogether. the new 1 series is the new entry level BMW, [probably intended to compete on price and take some of the market from the japanese] but they priced them all wrong.

There is only 200hp difference...the 135i has 300hp and the M5 has 500hp...I can't decide whether to have my company buy it or lease it with a company such as Putnam and negotiate a low residual and then give it to my now 14 year old daughter as her first car in 2010. I could live with the overall size, but the two place small backseat may be a problem...I may have to go with a used e46 M3 to get a three place back seat as I do not really like the new four door 335i...

Fully spec'd the 135i is $45k plus...I would get the 6spd ...silver with red or silver interior...

The 135i should have been lighter iMHO too...but, as far as price is concerned a fully spec'd 135i is still ~$10k+ less than a fully spec'd 335i...build them both on BMW's web site...as far as Japanese cars are concerned...have you priced them lately? A fully spec'd EVO GSR , G35 or STi spec out at ~$40k with the EVO MR. M45 or Acura TL ~ $45k...Asian cars aren't the el cheapo cars they once were...

The guys at the BMW Performance Center in SC say the 135i has more hp than the e46 M3 and that the 135i trounces the e46 M3 around its test track...my dealer's service guys who took the training on the 135i in SC say the same thing...

911 made the reliable list !
Killer news. Just as the wife is looking for another car. ;)

I drove the 135 as well. Lots of fun but the shape and back seats weird me out.
3 series coupe is beautiful on the other hand.
Chips boost either's turbo engine over 400 HP reliably.

The shared parts from the 3 series accounts both the high weight and price of the 1. As an owner of a current 3 Coupe it seems to me that between the 135 and the M3 the 335 has lost a lot of its attraction.

I like the I35. If I bought one I would go for the twin turbo six and the sport suspension package (w/18 inch tires) Other than that I'd be the price would very reasonable... ..

Loading it up with options is not the way to go with this sports coupe...IMO..

I think it would be a great car to go to after the big bruiser M5..

Its not about what others think of you but rather the enjoyment you are able to derive with your automotive choice.

The I35 harks back to the early 1970's 2002 Ti that really put BMW on the map as the "ultimate driving machine"

JMO and wishing you the best of luck...

It's a 10. Now the 135i does bring back the memories of the 2002tii when you equip it with the twin turbo. The 2002tii was a single, non-intercooled turbo. The 135i should really be reliable.............

Used to have the Euro 130i MSport (265hp.) Great little car... but it's no E46 M3 (which I also used to have.) and neither is the 135.

If they have sorted out last year's problems on the 335. Lots of issues related to over heated oil etc.
