Hi gang. Long time lurker/reader with a reason to post now. ha!

So I have been idling the 430 monthly (Purchased 9/2015, Started monthly idle 12/2015) and today I noticed white dust/smoke coming from the engine bay. It seems to be all coming out from where the header pipe meets the bottom of the muffler.

-Always wait till CHECK OK before starting car.
-Always wait till engine is at Op temp before revving
-Only shows up over 6K RPM
-The exhaust system is all stock.
-I have the valve vacuum lines unplugged (Always open) with electrical tape over the both the hose and the vacuum apparatus.
-No ticking sounds prior to startup or during idle and revving.
-No rich gasoline or exhaust smell in cabin during idle.
-No mechanical or metallic clacking when idle or revving.
-Service records show no changes to headers. Possible original from factory.

Here is a quick video of what I mentioned above and a photo of said dust.

I've searched and the tell tale signs of a bad header is white dust. But I don't have the other three symptoms. I also read that it could just be a bad weld? Thanks in advance for the input!

A harmless but annoying issue, the heatshield material inside the muffler is breaking down and coming out of the gaps in the pipes.

Ah wow. I did not know there was that insulating type material surrounding the silencer/muffler.

I guess what's happening is that the flow of higher RPM exhaust air/gas is just blowing any loose insulation out and all around.

Also I guess the only drawback is a hotter engine bay. Wonder if they sell a heat shield isolating the silencer/muffler from the rest of the bay.

    Thanks for the feedback guys!

Common problem. I had my muffler pipe seams welded 4 years ago. Cost £60 and I haven't seen any dust since.

All right. Thanks for the help guys.

I guess general consensus. No harm other than dust all over the place. And fix is to weld the silencer.

Or get a new exhaust :) Thats the better option in my opinion. I replaced mine once the dust started, and the new sound is intoxicating!

    Hello Guys

My F430 is doing a little bit of this suddenly.

I find so many "repair places" just say buy a new one. Hardly anyone these days wants to fix anything. They all take the easy expensive option. So I am wondering who on this forum has removed this problem by having it welded. How they did it and any photos. To me it seems simple. If it did not leak before and now is cracked but otherwise in good order then it is a simple matter of getting someone skilled in that procedure to weld up the cracks.

I just had a header on my boat engine crack. Everyone's answer was "buy a new one". Yeah sure for $6,000.00. Easy option again for them. So I hunt around and after talking to a bunch of con artists and walking away I find a very experienced guy who says "yeah I can fix that". So job done for a few hundred dollars.

I had mine welded a year ago - as soon as I noticed the dust. No issue since.

It sounds/looks like you are not actually driving the car, just warming it up in place in the garage.

    Not about the dust, but-
I have not seen anything yet that its a good idea to "idle" the car over 6,000 rpm...

I would appreciate seeing the reference where this is recommended.

If you lose too much of the insulation the box is going to get hot on the outside. The stainless cover you see with ferrari and various numbers stamped on it, is the outer cover. You should be able to get this taken off , then examine the exhaust box for cracks. If ok get the insulation renewed and put the outer casing back on. Look out for gas leaking out where the pipes exit the box.

Did yours crack and leak like "Sams" post at the top of this thread????

I am having trouble understanding where they leak.

Do they leak on the body of the muffler
Do they leak where the pipes join the muffler.

That insulation is coming out of the space between the exhaust box outer and the outer cladding, makes me think he has a leaking box- depends on the insulation type as some block type turn to dust due to vibration where as fibre types tend to stay in their original form. It might be a small gas leak picking up the insulation, hence if it gets worse best to take the outer cladding off and examine the box.Simple job to replace the insulation and cladding after you take a look

    Good points....

Find a good shop and they can cut the muffler open to inspect and replace the insulation. I'm sure that when the muffler is taken off, and if you shake it, you'll hear all of the loose debris (broken bits of insulation) moving around in it. Will be a lot cheaper than buying a new exhaust.......although I did end up changing over to Capristro, myself....

    Cheers,
    FN.

If you do find it is badly cracked it may not be possable to do a permanent weld repair, the gas has a habit of getting into the metal and no matter how much you grind it back it always has crap in it. We used to weld patches over cracks in big engine exhaust as it was a more stable fix.

I’m new to Ferrari Chat as I’ve been a Porsche collector. But really appreciate all the terrific feedback on my exhaust issue. My mechanic says the cars been sitting in a collection and the white grit issue will go away. Thanks all.

Welding the exhaust inlet and outlet where the seam is keeps the white powder in. Cost me $100 and no more issues. Here’s a pic when welded.

I have a stock muffler box with the same issue. It’s just in my decor pile of car parts. If I shake it around I can feel/hear crumbled pieces inside.

I thought this was considered a bad idea (?) The muffler has the expansion joint in the middle of the stainless casing and I have noticed it expands as much as an eighth of an inch after a spirited drive. Or did you only weld up the seams at the pipes(?)

I too get the annoying white dust but have been planning on replacing the muffler in the near future. So I just clean the engine bay more often.
