I had a customer with a 2004 Maserati 4200 coupe that had taken his car to another local shop where they changed his oil with Motul 15w50 300v competition race oil and a cheap off brand filter. He took it back to them because the engine was making noise and the oil pressure was dropping at idle. They blamed it on the cheap filter and installed an OEM filter. From what I understand the issue mostly went away but he could still hear some lifter noise every once in a while.

Now a few months later he brought his car to me for an oil change and I put an OEM Maserati filter on it and went with the recommended oil 5w40. Once the car heats up the oil pressure drops to about 8 PSI and the oil light comes on. I know what I am thinking but I would like to get another opinion.

Certainly not great news. That 15/50 oil change with questionable filter may have smoked the bearings resulting in greater tolerances such that the 5/40 can no longer make adequate pressure. Either continue to use a 15/50 or 5/50, or tear into the engine. Might be worth checking pressure with a mechanical gauge as well to be certain

Just a few less scary possibilities…

If you’re sure the engine was refilled properly, How are you measuring the 8psi? If it’s with the dash gauge you may want to confirm first with a external gauge connected. The built in sender is notorious for failing / being inaccurate.

Also making sure you’re using the right filter for the dry sump. The wet sump version looks almost identical (different part number).

Two Maserati/ Ferrari specialists here in Melbourne Australia both recommend using 10w60 penrite racing oil. Formula Dynamics also sell their 10w60 oil for 4200's.
I also tried to ensure that the lower air intake is not blocked by the number plate, by adding two 5mm spacers and angling the plate backwards slightly to allow more air to flow under the bottom edge. This should keep the engine a bit cooler in extremely hot conditions

racing oil is only for race cars!!

Use a name brand oil from Walmart with the correct viscosity for the car!

Then I would check the actual oil pressure with a gage.

I wouldn’t suggest this grade for all climates but for city driving in 110 degree Australia it’s not a bad option and it seems to keep the oil pressure heathy at tickover in traffic
