Hoping you guys can help, I am in process of replacing the original manifolds with a Tubi Style set purchased. Of course there is always 1 nut (13mm) which can't reach with wrench to remove, it is the number 8 cylinder one and sits just above the air conditioning compressor so access is very tight as you can see in the photos- I have tried everything to no avail - it appears I have to come at the nut from right to left, any assistance on someone who has been there, done that would be much appreciated. I think I recall using a 1/4 drive with a swivel end on a long reach extension... Blind (all done by feel).
I had the same problem. I finally decided to remove the heat shield and in doing so had to tear it up to get it off. Very easy to make another or purchase a stock one for replacement.
Thanks for the replies, will try the long reach 1/4 ratchet with swivel end first - if not I may have to customize one of my existing 13mm wrenches by having a welder bend it slightly to have the open end pointing left toward the nut.
@Neilg Solutions to this? I just noticed mine was missing!! Yep, just the bolt but no nuts... Also if someone can share the actual size/pitch of a replacement bold I could put there?
I had the same problem on my 430. I just unbolted the A/C compressor. Not sure if that would help on a 360 though.
just remove the ac compressor it's quick and easy and make the job much better. That is the right way to go about it. I think it took me about 8 min to remove. It's al ittle heavy so be weary of that.
Yup dropped my alternator and ac compressor for this job on my 360. I also had a good assortment of open end and box end wrenches gl
Thanks guys! I took the AC Compressor out tonight. This was not easy. The Allen long bolts, piece of cake. But the rear is also attached with a bracket. And it's either 3 13mm Hex, one of which is a tricky one. Or it's the 17mm of the engine support bracket but again, impossible to get a socket or a wrench on it. Anyhow, I got it removed taking the 13mm hex. And yes, that header nut is perfectly accessible now!! Waiting for the order to get here in a couple days.
I bypassed the ac compressor removal by going through the firewall since it was still open from my major. That made it one of the easier nuts to get to. 5 nuts to go lol
Is it possible to pull out the manifold without pulling the cat, because I am having all sorts of issues
I did yeah. At least on the passenger side. And BTW, the precat inside is loose. It moves back and forth. So now I’m seriously considering pulling both sides and put new ones. (Was thinking of repairing the weld before pulling it) Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
I got the drivers side out. I figured it it didn't come out today, tomorrow it would come out in pieces. I managed to get it out through the wheel well. Precat looks good, but the noise I heard came out of the other side. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Let us know what you find out on the other side. Was your noise ticking on cold start? I'll be curious as I'm wondering if my ticking was coming from the loose pre-cat material or the crack in the weld. That will help me decide if I keep the other side for now as I sourced a low mile replacement for my bad side.
Yes it was. I grabbed that valve under the intake hiping it was just that noise, but it didn't go away and appeared to be closer to the precat.
Bumping so as not to clutter the forum with a new thread: So, if I remove my firewall, I can get to the front most nuts without taking off the AC compressor and/or the alternator. Correct?
Get rid of the precats....sucked some into my engine. Thank god no damage but those are a ticking time bomb. Even in Calif I just added an extender and no smog issues. HTH
I've never, ever, ever had luck with "O2 extenders" on any car I've ever used them on. Also, a smog tech will fail you instantly. If my pre-cats are in good shape, I'm not touching them. Just my experience, of course. The smog shops anywhere in my part of California are super strict. It sucks.
That's what I thought. It'll be difficult to pass the visual inspection. That's one major reason why I'm hesitant to do it.
We're in a tough spot. The pre-cat *could* be a problem. New manifolds, if you can find them, are $5k each and still have the pre-cats. Used are $1200 each and who knows if they are any good and/or how long they will last....and have pre-cats LOL. For those of us in California, we don't really have a choice. Gotta roll the the dice and cross our fingers.
My experience with smog techs has been oooing and ahing over my car. I don't think half know what equipment is supposed to be there and not. My extenders, quite small really, never caused an issue with my guy. I don't have any pics as I lost the car in a shop fire last year.
Put on extenders before your next smog just for kicks and see if he visually fails you. Take off and go back. 15 minute job to add and remove them.
