    2000 Ferrari 360 challenge ‘118765’

I have assembled a complete challenge car collection over a number of years, and I’m putting some of the “duplicates” up for sale as I refine my collection. If you have shopped for these cars you’ll know they are difficult to locate, particularly cars that are complete and correct along with not having major damage history. To that end I decided to buy whatever good cars I came across along the way with the idea I may not have another chance. As years past there were times I ended up locating another similar model that I preferred in some instances for livery and other instance for competition history. It is for that reason I’m offering a few cars here. All of these cars have been returned to their last race livery, all have been properly serviced, all have been carefully used on track and have been shown at multiple Ferrari events such as the Formula One races at Miami and COTA as well as being displayed at Casa Ferrari for Pebble Beach.

    The car offered here:
    • Argento / Nero
    • Campaigned 2000 by Ferrari of Houston as car number 31
    • Originally owned and driven in the challenge series by John Cumming - attaining multiple podium finishes as well as overall wins.
    • Redone in its original livery as raced in the challenge series.
    • Recent major service by FastCars

The Ferrari 360 Challenge was launched in 2000 and this is one of the earliest of the 270 cars produced. The 360 Challenge was a fully factory-built racing car, rather than returning to marque dealers for retrofitted upgrade kit. Fewer than 300 examples were built, with each car featuring a suite of changes to make it markedly more potent on the circuit than its road-going relative.

In the cabin, the airbags, air conditioning, electric windows, radio, soundproofing, and even the handbrake were all removed in the name of saving weight. Gone too were the leather seats, with the passenger seat being removed entirely and the driver’s seat replaced by a fixed carbon bucket affair. The only items that were added were for regulatory reasons; a monochrome Magneti Marelli digital LCD instrument cluster, FIA-standard roll cage, racing harness, and fire suppression system. Weight-saving measures extended to the exterior, where lightweight lexan glass windows were utilised for the doors and featherweight plexiglass for the engine cover. The result was a car that weighed almost 200 kilograms less than the standard variant.

While the 3.6-litre V-8 powertrain was more than capable in its road-going form, it too benefitted from motorsport fettling; namely titanium conrods and a freer flowing “straight-through” racing exhaust for the engine, and an upgraded oil cooler and racing clutch for the F1-style automated transmission. Keeping all of the additional performance in check were more powerful brakes from Brembo, featuring the largest two-piece floating discs that would fit behind the lightweight racing wheels.

This particular example of the 360 Challenge was delivered in 2000 making its debut at Homestead during the same year. It was campaigned nearly every race that season with good success seeing several podiums and a few outright wins. Later the car was campaigned in SCCA and Forza events as well as being used for Ferrari club track days. Finished in the same livery it wore in its debut season, the car is accompanied by a number of books and records as well as some spares such as fuel cans and original fuel tanks. The car does have an updated cage to comply with later race requirements. It was fully serviced by FastCars in summer of 2022. The next owner of this 360 Challenge could enjoy the car on track days or in eligible racing events immediately.

The car is in excellent “race car” condition. That is to say it does have nicks and chips here and there from track use but no major flaws. The livery is as it last raced in the challenge series with and the car is mostly complete and correct. You can see the roll cage has been updated with a later design for safety. As previously mentioned the car has extensive service history from new and was last given a major in 2022 with only five hours since then. The car also includes a binder of maintenance, settings, log books, etc since new. The only flaw I can think of on this car is the LCD instrument panel flips between dim and standard setting for some reason. After reviewing what other 360 challenge cars have recently traded for I am pricing this factory 360 challenge at $100k. Serious buyers PM me for more information and photos or to arrange inspections.

In addition to what’s listed above the car comes with a new set of bbs 18” challenge wheels, two or three spare seats, a spare carbon fuel tank system, and other stuff for running it on track. It also has a racelogic system with cameras etc installed. Lastly it’ll include a three ring binder with full service history from new including the challenge series documents for 2000 and 2004 as well as all subsequent service and race history/logs.

Nice. I had one of these, it was a 2002. Tons of fun and easy to work on. Tremendous fun factor for the dollar.

One question I’ve been asked a couple times is will I consider trades. Although I’m trying to narrow focus with my collection I will consider trades (preferably Ferraris) in part/whole on a case be case basis.

The other thing I’ve had a few people ask about the records for this car. The car comes a full 3 ring binder with all service documentation from its first (2000) and second (2004) season in the challenge series as well as subsequent documentation for its racing use since including the scca logbook as it ran T1 several seasons. The car has mainly been serviced by Ferrari dealers and later by respected independent shops like FastCars. Here’s a sampling of the documents included with the aforementioned binder of history:

Appreciate the info. From everything I had read the number was 270, perhaps US market cars vs world production. Still it’s interesting to know it was the 50th built which makes sense since it raced the inaugural season for the 360 cars (and again in 2004). Thanks for sharing.
