Back when I was younger and my metabolism was active this would be possible.
Can a 40 something yr old guy still do this?

FWIW, I think the bigger question will be more along the lines of: after I lose 20lbs in 30 days, will I be able to maintain a lower weight.

In my experience, the answer is 'typically not'. Better to alter your diet, add exercise and - although it will be slower - set yourself up to keep the weight off long term.

    Depends on your starting point.

No - that is not remotely realistic.

    Yes

Do the HCG diet and be stict with the food. You will have to be comfortable giving yourself a shot every day.

Follow the diet to the letter and it can be done.

Keeping it off afterwards is another issue

I lost 25lb in 45 days when I was 40. Kept it off for nearly 5 years then gain 10 back. Started a new routine 6 months ago dropped 15lb and 12% body fat in 3 months. I'm 46. So yes you can but if you want to keep it off then you want to drop 2lb per week.

    I'm now a personal trainer...

Realistically, if you concentrate on improving/increasing your physical fitness level then your other goal will follow.

That too. It's easier to lose 20 when you are carrying 100+ extra pounds.

why do you want to lose 20 pounds in 30 days? it is better to lose it in 60 days if you want to keep it off. if you concentrate on improving your physical fitness everything else will follow

I've done it, but it damn well gets harder the older you are. I'm pretty active/fit in general and I cranked up the exercise and ratcheted down the foot... but it doesn't come off like it did in my early 20's.

My friend dropped 20lbs within a month a few years ago just by changing his diet and not drinking for a while.

Key component has to be the size you begin with. When I went from 240lbs to 185-190lbs it was much quicker loosing 240 - 210 then losing 210-200 and so fourth. Anything is almost realistically possible but I wouldn't suggest it unless you have a title fight.

So yes you could if you needed to using the methods mentioned above.

If there is no urgency I suggest an overall healthier routine that will give you a sustainable weightloss through time. Right now I have a fairly short time line and hit a high of 208lbs after my month of vacation. I'm looking to drop +15lbs in 3 weeks without extreme sacrifices (a beer or two, food I want to eat, sweets, and so fourth). I'm 6' 2" and broad shouldered so 208lbs isn't big for my stature just a personal thing.
