FOR SALE: 1994 Ferrari 348 challenge ‘98791’ I have assembled a complete challenge car collection over a number of years, and I’m putting some of the “duplicates” up for sale as I refine my collection. If you have shopped for these cars you’ll know they are difficult to locate, particularly cars that are complete and correct along with not having major damage history. To that end I decided to buy whatever good cars I came across along the way with the idea I may not have another chance. As years past there were times I ended up locating another similar model that I preferred in some instances for livery and other instance for competition history. It is for that reason I’m offering a few cars here. All of these cars have been returned to their last race livery, all have been properly serviced, all have been carefully used on track and have been shown at multiple Ferrari events such as the Formula One races at Miami and COTA as well as being displayed at Casa Ferrari for Pebble Beach. Additionally all will be sold with a “fresh major” or a credit for it should you wish to have your own shop perform the work. The car offered here: #26 of 32 “Factory Challenge” Ferrari 348tb Grigio Metallic / Red (only 348 challenge car built in this color) Campaigned 1994 & 1995 by Lake Forest Sportscars as car number 26 Originally owned and driven in the challenge series by Richard Klarchek. Absolutely complete with two binders of records of service, ownership, race documentation, books, tool kit, original items updated such as fire bottle, and even the window sticker. Street legal car with a title. In 1994 Ferrari built 32 “factory” challenge cars as TB version, and another 13 as TS version. All of them were based on standard street cars however the factory built this limited batch with challenge specific modifications including carpet cutouts and leather capped cutouts on the firewall to accommodate the roll cage, pre-welded plates for the roll cage, stiffer springs, solid suspension bushings, eye hooks for the harnesses, and supposedly lighter weight front and rear bumper and different ECU's though Ferrari hasn’t confirmed or denied those last two. The balance of the challenge parts were installed at the dealership and not all of the cars built as factory challenge cars got the kit, about half never had it installed and had a “delete option” if they opted for just the car and no additional race components. Many of these cars received a number plate in the door jamb showing it was a factory numbered car, although this particular one did not get a plate. If that was an order choice or not, I do not know. Still this car is listed as a factory 348 challenge and completely documented. The car is in excellent “race car” condition. That is to say it does have nicks, chips, and wear here and there from track use but no major flaws. The livery is as it last raced with and the car is mostly complete and correct. You can see the Kevlar seats have been recovered in incorrect but close looking material. It’s a simple recover to the OMP fabric should you choose. As previously mentioned the car has extensive service history from new and will include either a “fresh major” at a shop nearby me in NY or a credit for one at your own shop. After careful consideration of comparable cars including what much higher production variants such as serie speciale cars have recently traded for I am pricing this factory 348 tb challenge at $195k. Serious buyers PM me for more information and photos or to arrange inspections. I owned this car for years (Joe bought it from me), during which time it was almost bullet-proof, and a strong runner. I also owned #94285, a '93 tb Serie Speciale car that was converted in-period to full Challenge spec by Wide World (and raced pretty extensively), but this was certainly the stronger of the two. I haven't seen the car in a while, but it appears to be very accurately described here.
Don’t mean to derail the post. I have the original factory seats that came in this car. I bought them from A.J. Lilly in 2014, not sure why I bought them but they were/are in perfect condition and I couldn’t pass them up. If your buyer is interested in them I would sell them at a reasonable price to the buyer. Again sorry to butt in; if you want to have the mods delete this post feel free. Image Unavailable, Please Login
I was fortunate to have driven this car as an entry to the Lakewood Ranch ( FL) Exotic Car Show a couple of years ago. Joe was driving his 355 Challenge Car. What a great time, and the cars were show-stoppers. .
I will buy the original leather seats Vern posted that were in it before the OMP challenge seats were swapped for the next owner of this car and have them shipped to you. They should be with the car even if they’re not used. Keeping these complete and correct is a big deal!
My good friend Lee (Sfumato) drove it on a road tour and the track at Miami F1 weekend too. More recently it has been driven by the head of Ferrari Motorsports as well as the original director for the 348 series. Make me a compelling offer and you can drive it next!
Cool car. Animoya Garage just sold one, not sure if theirs had been raced as it is currently in normal street configuration. They touted theirs had a classiche “white book.” Any chance this has one? Is the paint original and any major damage sustained during racing? I’m curious but so hard to put a value on these. I don’t know how to PM. I’m in NY/CT if you have more pics or info to send. Thanks
I didn’t bother getting classiche for my challenge cars but I’m sure it’d get the book without issue. Just pay Ferrari the fee and have them inspect it. I can arrange it if the buyer desires as I’ve got a good relationship with my service department. No major damage in its history. It’s straight and everything fits well. I believe most of the paint is original, although the bumpers have certainly been repainted. I’ll PM you additional photos of the car - I’ve got many! Lastly I don’t know which exactly but the profile of this car was in Cavallino magazine while at Pebble Beach in 2022. Kinda cool thing…
A couple of Ferrari dealers have approached me for if/when you want to sell deals but my preference was to have them go to fchat guys instead. If they don’t end up selling to any members the guys at RM have plans for them. In talks with some guys here so hopefully they end up with other users.
Great job and so glad to see these cars get some love, especially the early ones. They to me are the most fun to drive, just fast enough, and the steering is the best. The challenge suspension fixed any precived handling issues noted by the early articles, something I never experienced. I have Jim Kenton's car that won the last 348 Series title, 348B as this was the first year they ran the 355, and have used this car as a rally car driving over 50,000 miles. This is also the first challenge car converted based on records and documentation from Lake Forrest and the late great David Seibert. The memories and frienships created....It was a blast, and having full race pipes my ears have suffered. Kudos to you sir for recognizing this important part of Ferrari history, the longest single marque racing series. I too wonder if BAT would not be the right venue for this car.
There are some neat videos out there that should show your car, just went back and noted your reference to Lake Forest, I'm guessing our cars were in the same stable. This is Mosport, I drove over 1,000 miles to FCA2008, full track event, then home. Whoever buys this car will not regret it, drive it, love it.
Lots of interesting footage and personalities out there, I'm looking for the video Paul Fame sponsored, I think your car is there. There's a crazy backstory on him. https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/ferrari-owner-racer-paul-frame-off-to-jail.55330/
One question I’ve been asked a couple times is will I consider trades. Although I’m trying to narrow focus with my collection I will consider trades (preferably Ferraris) in part/whole on a case be case basis. The other thing I’ve had a few people ask about the records for this car. I’ll say this is likely the most well documented 348 challenge in existence. It comes with three full 3 ring binders full of information from warranty card and window sticker through service and ownership of every owner since new. It’s also got manuals and all technical and race related documents for the period it ran in the challenge series.
