I have been looking for a Modial. This one is close to me: Ferrari : Other MONDIAL CABRIOLET in Ferrari | eBay Motors I went and looked at it and drove it. It is a nice car, starts, shifts runs and drives OK. I never got it over about 30 mph though. Major, engine out service was done 10K ago. What do you guys think of the items that need attention? Lights, A/C, wipers. Relays? Also, at 60K is this one worn out or will it go a bit longer? Also, where can I get a good PPI locally without going to the dealer? All info and opinions are greatly appreciated. Alden.
Alden, the car looks very good to me. With all the Tools and book. You drove the car so you know how it runs. I paid mine $22,000 a year and a half ago but with a fresh service but has no Tools or jack and rear tires were gone and front seats needed to be reupholstered right away. I think you won't find any better for the price. They ALL have something to do when you buy them. I think you can't really go wrong. All the electrical problems can be from the fusebox. If you buy get it repaired by Dave Helm and you may solve them all. BTW my car has 75,000 miles and still drive like a charm. I bought it unseen with no PPI. I'm happy with my car.
Hello Alden, I have an 88 Mondial and can tell you this is a superb car. At 60k miles, nothing to worry about. However, 10k miles ago all of the belts were changed and it sat in storage for a year. The question is its 2013 now, what year was 10k miles ago? The Cambelts are rated for 3 years or 30k miles per Ferrari. Disclosed Issues: (HEADLIGHT RELAY & WIPERS, A/C RELAY ) (Lights & motors work fine, but relay makes them stay up) How do the owner know its the relays that's the problem, sounds more like a FUSEBOX problem which means you will probably need a new one. FUSEBOX on these cars are notorious to go bad and cause electrical gremlins. If thats the case, DAVE HELMS (Scuderia Rampante Ferrari) can get you a good fuse box. The asking price is low but depending on if its time to do the belts again, you can add another $5k to the price + fusebox $1300 which you can be looking at $28,300 + AC recharge. The left rear roof pillar looks to be torn or patched up? Check for leaks of any kind. How is the clutch slave cylinder? Does it over heat in traffic? You need to drive it more than 30 mph. How are the brakes, e-brake okay on a hill? Radio working? Tires and brakes okay? Make sure you check the window buttons, especially rear windows, fuel button, bonnet buttons, center console buttons. Find a good shop for your PPI. Looks to be in great shape IMHO. Best VIN# ZFFXC26A1J0075259 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Z = Italy FF= the Ferrari marques manufactured by Ferrari SpA. Thanks for the comments guys! The seats are going to need some work and the owner did disclose that the tires were old and needed to be replaced too. Alden
It does look really clean and so cheap. Well it is from a UK market where they start from £25,000 approx $37,000 USD. Follow the advice from the guys here and you will have a winner!
Peter, what can I say. The grass is always greener somewhere else as they say. In America, the cabrios are everywhere and its hard to find coupes therefore driving up their costs, especially for a T coupe. The opposite of the UK market but here is a factoid. Back in the day, Americans only wanted the cabrios so they stopped importing the coupes after 91. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3icPXD1ItDs[/ame]
It does look nice. Having history tends to make one belive it was taken care of. My car has 70K miles on it and still has the original clutch. The engines are solid and there is no reason with proper maintenance they can't go far in excess of 100K miles. They have definately come down in price. In 2009 mine was advertised by the prior owner for $30K and it was not in the condition this one is in. Looks to be priced fairly.
Valuable advice above..... I did notice on the Date of Manufacture was October 1997. Was it built in 1997 and sold as an '88? Let me know if you need roof toggles or the center vent foam and wedge rebuild kit. Good luck with it. - Ron Frohock
Alden, I've been around Mondials for a long time and, if you like, I can meet you to look over this car. I'm barely an hour away from Windermere. Also, regarding a PPI, I would suggest calling Bill at Speed Works in Osteen. Speed Works Ferrari Racing Services BTW, have you downloaded the Owner's manual yet?
Hey Alden, I can't give you a lot of advice, I have T. But the guys here with similar types sure do know there cars and I have no problem with both types! Good Luck!
And if you look in the pictures the books are for 87 model year. Alden have you decide something or just waiting the end of auction?
Any reason (other than the obvious price difference ) that this wouldn't be a better car? Lower miles, recent documented service, new top, etc. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1992-Ferrari-Mondial-T-Cabriolet-Major-Service-Done-Books-Records-5-Speed-Nice-/300941023838?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item46117b9a5e#ht_56036wt_958 I've learned the hard way to always buy the best car you can afford and this one "appears better" to my admittedly untrained eye.
"t' vs. 3.2 debate? $10k price difference (as you note), if in similar condition ( I know higher miles) is also a factor, to say nothing of it being "local" for hands on viewing. Just speculating........ Regards, Jerry
I think he just dropped the price by a grand. If the car checks out, its a bargain at $20k... If I was in the market, I would be all over it. Be prepared to spend up to $10k for repairs/service if need be. Best
Its time for new belts, 3 years or 30k miles recommended from Ferrari if you follow the book. Will it break and fall apart tomorrow, probably not, but with these cars, lower the risk, better the reward of ownership experience. If I bought it, I would do all of the belts along with the WP. cheers
Showing my ignorance here...what is WP? Water Pump? I'm not really interested in this particular car...just trying to learn
1988 is an ideal year because it's the latest generation Mondial that doesn't need the engine removed for belts. It also just past the 25 year emissions testing in many states.
