For sale is my 1988 Mazda RX-7 Convertible with only 29,000 original miles. The phrase "time capsule" is thrown around a lot, but I think this car truly qualifies. I purchased this car a few months ago with the intention of keeping it long term. We all know how that goes. Unfortunately a surprise Ferrari purchase means I no longer have room to keep it. Since I planned on keeping it, I did all the work needed to bring this beauty up to spec for everyday driving. It looks beautiful, drives like a dream, and may be the cleanest remaining example of an FC convertible in the US. Purchased in Texas, I believe the prior owner was the owner/proprietor of the St. Louis Car Museum. At least that is where it resided for many years prior to my purchase. I bought it with around 27K miles, and drove it from Texas to Colorado without any issues. Current mileage stands just above 29,000. Since the purchase, the following has been performed in the last month at a cost of almost $6K: - Full Racing Beat exhaust. Really opens the car up, and sounds amazing without being obnoxious. Think "angry bees!". - All belts replaced - New battery terminals and custom battery hold-down and j-bolts - All new fluids - New rear pads and rotors (front are fine) - Rebuilt rear calipers - Custom heat shield for the RB exhaust - New wiper/convertible switch cluster The car comes with a binder including the original bill of sale ($25K in 1988!) and Mazda literature. It even includes the original financing paperwork. 10% was pretty good for 1988, he must have had great credit. There are a few things that are less than perfect. I'm pretty anal about disclosure, so some of these may not even be noticeable, but: - Paint is excellent, but shows a few chips and fade spots as to be expected on a 35 year old car no matter what the miles. - Radio works, but the speakers are pretty shot. The tape deck will not eject, so not sure what tape is in there. Perhaps it'll be a happy surprise! Honestly, were I to keep it I'd install a new head unit and just replace all the factory speakers. By the way, this has the headrest speaker option with the cool control center in the center console. - Wipers don't 'auto park'. They work, you just need to time the 'off'. I replaced the unit and still get the same issue. - Fuel gauge only reads to a bit over 1/2. I had the system checked and all is well with everything in the tank, so I think it's just a stick gauge. When I bought the car it only read to 1/4, then a week later to 1/2, now creeping up. It may very well just unstick itself. - Small crack in aircon control bezel, looks to have been repaired sometime in the past - Very small tear in convertible roof (exterior) above the window. About 1/4 inch, hasn't grown. More a slit than a tear. I'm wracking my brain to find any other flaws, but the truth is I bought the best car I could find and spent a good deal of money making it even better. I wouldn't hesitate to hop in and drive it across the country tomorrow. Though I'd likely get a new radio first. Let me know if you have any questions or require more specific photos. And please excuse the water spots in the pictures, there was a lot of pollen today so I gave it a quick spray-down without thinking. I assure you the paint is excellent. Asking $21,500 which I believe is fair given the miles and condition. I challenge you to find a better example of a 1988 'vert. As always, I'm open to interesting trades. Motorcycles, watches, 1 year on a private island, that kind of thing. Link to additional Photos: https://photos.app.goo.gl/qBZjLegtmDwsYchZA Thanks! Loved mine - also an '88, but in black/grey. Like mine, this one has the higher-level package (can't recall what it was called), which you can tell by the speakers in the headrests. Even when new, the speakers were a weak point. Could have always used more power, but it was a sweet driver, lots of fun, and gorgeous. Special cars, for sure, and with the neatness of the original binnacle/controls, rather than the more conventional "upgrade" of the '90-'92 models. One of my "least modded" cars back then, because it was great to begin with: Wider wheels/tires, brake lines and pads, and upper strut mounts* from Racing Beat that dropped the front "just right" without changing springs/shock/travel.... and eventually, those speakers. Somebody will discover a very enjoyable car with this one. * https://www.racingbeat.com/RX7-1986-1992/Suspension-Components/14000.html
Did you replace the wiper switch unit with new or used? New is like $1k, and will still fail after a few years. I have owned 5 FC's including an 88 convt. The 12V relay(s) inside the switch go bad. The factory one(s) is a moving relay. The replacement from Omron is good for "life". Or at least 25 years and going in my case on multiple cars. It's bit of de-soldering work. Current owner or new owner can send me the switch if you like, and I can do the update for free(you buy relay(s)).
One interesting note on the 88 convt. The rear differential gearing is higher than the coupe. Slower acceleration, but lower rpm at highway speed, in order to help mpg, since it's 400lbs heavier. If you only own one, it's not noticeable, but if you have a coupe, and switch between cars, it's very noticeable. Making it a better highway cruiser. Another cool item is the flip up wind deflector. I think the rx7 convt was the first to have something like this? It's absolutely amazing. With it up, there is no wind buffeting. Much more comfortable than other convertibles of the same era.
Replaced with a used one. The one in the car originally was missing the knob for the top operation, and I couldn't find just the knob so I replaced the whole unit. My mechanic took apart the 'spare' and basically said "yeah, these aren't meant to be opened and fixed". I'll definitely look into that relay!
I do. I used to live and breath RX7's. I had one vert, but needed to dump atf fluid in the intake every time I wanted to drive it. Low compression lol Had a 1st gen, 2nd gen and 3 3rd gens.
I always wanted a CYM, but always got stuck with the gross red/tan combo... but did have a white one once.
Thoughtful thing to say to a fella that apparently has one of those "gross red/tan" cars. LOL Sent from my SM-F936U1 using FerrariChat.com mobile app
I had an '87 Turbo II, modded with Racing Beat's full exhaust system, turbo boost regulator, and fuel cut controller. I was fearless in that car and terrorized the canyons in it for years!
Bought one new and drove to work the next day and all my buddies.. Dude, you bought a chicks car!!!! Funny now......
I had a 79 I purchased new. Red with Black interior. I also added the Racing Beat mods a few years later. Flywheel, intake, carb and exhaust and suspension work. A blast to drive!!! Good luck with the sale of this gem!!!
u2fast is your man but he's busy working on me in the hospital ( and other things) I did send it to a friend that speneds his money on hookers and blow.. But don't expect much from THAT referral!
