1982 Porsche RUF BTR 3.4 “Lightweight”

The vehicle was sold new by Porsche as a standard Germany Domestic Market Example with no supplemental options in plain white with a black interior. The car then went directly to RUF’s Pfaffenhausen, Germany facility where it completed extensive modifications to the body, interior, suspension, engine and gearbox. The archivist at RUF provided a letter detailing all of the modifications of the vehicle and a page reference from the RUF book in the photo gallery above identified the model as a "RUF BTR Turbo Lightweight.” We have had several RUF chassis numbered and client provided vehicles over the years, but this was the first “Lightweight” example we had encountered and out of curiosity, we had it corner-weighted with fuel and total weight was just 2,793lb or about 200lb less than a stock BTR / 930 Turbo.

RUF rated the heavily revised engines at 374bhp and utilized their own designed 5-Speed transaxle that predated the highly coveted “G50” unit that would not be released until 1989.

Upon completion of the work at RUF Pfaffenhausen, Germany, the car was then sold new to a Japanese enthusiast and imported to Japan where it was road registered after the RUF body mounted mirrors were removed and standard mirrors installed to meet JDM registration requirements.

A set of the correct, original mirrors are included with the sale and can be seen in the Bring-A-Trailer photo gallery. The car was well known in Japan and frequently seen, photographed and well documented in various articles prior to our purchase earlier last year.

Upon arrival, we completed extensive services and maintenance. After the completion of all work, I spent several days inspecting, photographing and driving the daylights out of it. It is impossible to describe the car’s complete performance oriented nature without driving it yourself. It feels significantly lighter, lower and better balanced than any Porsche Turbo from that era that I have yet encountered.

The gearbox gears and final drive ratios are matched perfectly to the engines massive torque curve and there is little to no turbo lag. Boost is linear from 2,200rpm all the way up the RPM curve until you see God and beg for it to stop. Fortunately the brakes and new tires are well up to the task of slowing this lightened example down to civilized speeds in a rapid manner.

RUF’s individual records for the BTRs range from good to nonexistent. It seems to be hit or miss with some being well documented and others being a total mystery. Fortunately this one is well documented from new by RUF themselves and with continuous, uninterrupted ownership and records from the moment it was built to the present.

Various sources and RUF themselves indicate that approximately 45 to 50 client conversion Porsche Turbos were completed in several variations as either BTR or BTR Lightweights and another 25 to 30 were completed and issued RUF VIN numbers starting in 1983. In any case, production from 1977 to 1989 did not exceed 100 total units, making each example that survives, quite rare.

In November of 2023, our company sold this vehicle to a Porsche collector who then spent several months working with RUF USA to obtain a variety of RUF Factory Accessories including RUF bonnet and rear deck lid badges, rocker sill plates, RUF pedals, a RUF dead-pedal and RUF floor mats. The rims were completely restored and refinished and the front headlights were removed and replaced with correct original units.

I would imagine this is confidential so...keep it low and only on Fchat.
Right now the BaT reserve is set at $250,000.00..as recommended by Bill Noon.
Like I said, My friend the owner is all ears up until auction..and if reserve not met..after auction too.
This car is as close to a unicorn as it gets!

Came up about 18% short of your reserve as indicated here on Fchat, but I guess you decided to sell it anyway.
