Interior is all original. William, the owner told me they bought the 928 for $1500 off Auto Trader. Interior was taken completely apart including the fabric from the seat centers and dry-cleaned. Truly a work of art and passion!

    Likewise.
Had S4 in 1987 just as they came out and no other car since, has made such an impression on me like that Porsche, not 599, 458 or 991TTS.
They were all great cars but none gave me the same feeling I had while driving S4.
I'm still looking for a car that would make the same impact on me, hoping for the new Conti GT coming next year to be close to it.

    I agree.
Could it be that Porsche back then were building to an engineering and design masterclass, rather than producing to a market price point ?
It's a well known fact that Porsche were losing money on each 928 sold, as they cost way more to build. The exact production cost remains a mystery, but it's astonishing they carried on refining and building it for 25 years, as money was no object then.
Sadly they let the accountants take over mid-90's. Like Concorde, true end of an engineering era.

I have never heard that Porsche lost money on every 928 sold. What is the source of this data? I don't think they would have produced the car from 1977-1995 if this were true.

Perhaps you are thinking of the 959, where this was rumored to be the case...

It is true. As a matter of fact, Porsche lost money on all it's cars from the mid 80's until the Boxster/996. During this time the Deutschmark became too strong against the dollar. The global demand for the 928 went way down to barely 25 cars a day. Porsche was in a financial crisis and was seriously looking to find a new owner. A 928 cabrio and GTS was planned. The cost to develop the cabrio was too much. It was gorgeous BTW. A new twin-turbo based on what was learned from the 959 code-named 965 was being developed (not to be confused with the wide body 964 based turbo). Development resources were balanced between the 928, 968, 959, 964 and 965.

That is an amazingly pure and flowing shape for a convertible ! Kudos to Porsche.

Chris, fantastic! Silver is such a winner on the voluptuous 928, what a color to show off the timeless design Mobius penned 4 decades ago!

That "S" is the genius reflection created by design, which Lapine was determined to achieve.

I do not think that statement is true. Please provide statistics to back it up.

    Hello Chris,

    Hans here from Germany.

Usually I am found in the Maserati section as I own some of these cars from 50ies/60ies.

But your thread made me think, what an advanced car the 928 was.

To cut the story short, I just bought almost your brother #245 in Michigan last week.

Silver, 5-Speed, but my favourite interior Pasha.

It's a rolling restoration and I have to finish it, when over here.

    Best greetings
    Dr. K.

This is great to hear! Sounds like you bought Jim Doerr's car that was on BaT?

    Hi Chris,

    not from BAT.

It was advertised in Craigslist some weeks ago.

More or less I bought it unseen, but I got one of the longest emails of my entire "webcareer"
from Mike describing all ups and downs owning such a model over the years.

After this I had to have it.

Jim moved his operation from VA to Michigan and is now getting #241 back on track!

Paint is complete and now suspension, engine, etc are being restored.
