According to today’s local newspaper, a man walked into the Costa Mesa DMV to register his 1961 Ferrari 250-GT SWB. He told them the value was $26,500 and paid ten percent as the fee.

After the man left, a supervisor had some questions. Was this a kit car being registered as a real Ferrari? If this was a real Ferrari, was the value only $26,500?

After an investigation, the man has been arrested for three felonies: perjury, grand theft, and false evidence of documents. It turns out he paid ₤600,000 in London for the car.

I don't understand: if he paid for the car, how is it grand theft?

Don't mess with a State thats broke and cheat on any taxes is a lesson learned as well.
That probably was the highlight of the DMV guys career he'll be talking about that for 20 years, he can now retire as it gets no better.

Must be very tempting to change the value of your car if its taxed at 10%, is that 10% yearly?

Wait, 10% for registration? What the hell? It's a flat $36.00 here.

In California, you pay "sales tax" on a car purchase - new or used - either at the dealer where you purchase the car, or if sold via private party, at the DMV. The tax is based on the sales tax rate of your county of residence. I live in Santa Clara County where sales tax is 8.25%, so I paid 8.25% of my purchase price at the DMV when I registered my car. They didn't ask for any documentation of the sales price, but I had it if needed.

Fudging a couple thousand dollars off of a car's price, while still not legal, is one thing. Trying to cut its value by over a factor of ten, however, is a completely different ballgame in my opinion, and the guy got what he deserved.

We pay sales tax in PA too. I think its 6 or 7 percent, and 5 percent in MD.
