Ok, now that the 400 is running (and staying running), I can finally change the oil. I see that in the shop manual it gives a capacity of 18.5 litres (or 19.5 quarts). Is this correct or is it one of those lovely Ferrari service typos?

    Sounds about right.

Just to be sure, it's always a good idea to pull the dipstick a few times along the way with an unfamiliar car.

Once you pull the drain plug you can go have lunch. It takes forever to drain all that oil.

OH! Make sure the oil change container you have will hold it all and isn't just a 15 quart model.

It may only take around 16.5 liters or so because the oil in the oil cooler usually doesn't drain.

Yup, 16 litres is what my mechanic tells me for my 365. Now for that dreaded choice of what oil and filter, the blend seems to the one of preference. and for the filter ?(now I am shrugging my shoulders up and down).

Baldwin B253 That is what I have been using it is a Ford high performance oil filter, so it has the anti bleed back valve and it a higher pressure relief valve. I spent some time at a filter store I have been using and we matched up the Ferrari factory spec.'s with this and it is easy to get and not $$. OR
    Ferrari # 111782
    U.F.I. # 2316200
    Wicks # 51622
    FRAM # 2804-1
    Mahle # OC-51
Which have the right features also.
17 quarts in a oil change.
I have found it takes me extra time to work on this car becouse I end up gazing a lot, such a beautiful engine!!

Well, regarding the type of oil and filters I use for the 400i, basically the same as what I use in my 308, as follows:

    Oil: Agip SINT 2000 10W-40

    Filter(s): Mann W940/1

As I've stated here before, Mann filters are top quality, OEM for Mercedes, BMW, Porsche, etc... and they do have an anti-drainback valve. I get them from CFP Filters for about $12/each versus $40 for the UFI, and I'll say that even in my 83K mile 308, I have oil pressure almost instantly when starting from a long-standing cold temp.

    Cheers,
    Aaron

Yesterday, I have changed the oil in my 400iA for the first time (it was supposed to be changed before I bought the car in August 2006).

It takes exactly 18.5 litres (including the new filters) when topped to the max. mark. However, I did fill 17 litres only, since it has almost no oil consumption and I will not add more than 3000 kms before the next change will be due.

I was using the FRAM PH 2804-1 filters which cost 4 times (!) less than the UFI from the friendly Ferrari dealer's shop.
Unfortunately, I could not identify the air filters and got them from Ferrari at a horrendous price, just finding on the UFI box the cross reference to Volkswagen. At least I will know where to go next time.

I'm using Amsoil ARO 20W50 with Amsoil EA015 filters that I just put in about 200 miles ago. So far, so good.

    Dave,

    The filter is used in VW K 70 (8/72-->). V.A.G. No. 028 129 635 A.
It is identical to FRAM CA 3135 or KNECHT LX 221 or MANN C 39997.

I found a site that says they have K&N filters for 1973 VW K70.

    http://www.dragtimes.com/Volkswagen-K-70-KN-Air-Filter-Part-59212.html

I'm going to compare the measurements on this site to my filters. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Did a quick stop at AdvanceAuto today, their computers didn't show VW K-70(I had the part# supplied here, they were able to quote $55.48-Shipped from factory--10-14 days)

www.knfilters.com , you can search filters by dimensions(ht., outside length, outside width), it's amazing the dimensional arrays they have. Should be able to measure any vehicles filter & X-ref/they will also custom make as well. The 400's dimensions X-references to 1979-86 Porsche 924 2.0litre FI Turbo.
