Can this be true? There is an ad for a 328GTS on Autotrader which states "this car changed hands for £175,000 in early 90s" Were 328's really that expensive back then? I find it almost impossible to believe. Cheers, Nigel.
Absolutely they were.....I have a Bill of Sale for my 328, dated May 1990 for £196,000 !!!! Same buyer sold it 5 years later for £60,000 (px'd against an F40 actually). Over £27k worth of depreciation a year !!! What a hit to take.... Regards, Seb
WOW, holy ****! Thanks Seb. I had no idea they went so high. I had heard they reached 100k, but not 196k. Nigel.
I have kept a sale bill for my ex 328 from 1990 and that was for £146,000. I kept it becourse i thought that was very high, but not as high as 170ish.
They'll be lucky... Verdis and Nick Cartwright have a 1200 mile example for £44k which doesn't seem too outrageous if you are a collector. But if you intend to use it, it seems a waste of money. Late 1980's classic car mags make great reading, esp the classifieds; some prices are unbelieveable, especially when everyone thought they were investments. Ha ha... On the other hand, I have a late 1940s car magazine where a Type 35 Bugatti could have been yours for just over £100!
Ahhh, those were the days... the mortgage interest rate was 19%, I was living with the parents at the time and between us we were so skint (to cover the mortgage) I was taking loo roll home from work. Meanwhile, 8 miles up-the-road in the City of London city-bods were getting £million bonusses. House prices were exploding, shares were rocketing and Harry Enfield's 'loadsamoney' character was a role model ! the whole thing was MAD. Cars were definately changing hands for stupid money.
My Pa says that £100 was a reasonable amount of money then, but not a huge amount- certainly would have turned a handsome profit if one had stocked up then... Turning to the 355, I believe at launch the list price of a 355 was around £85k, by '96 it was around £88k, rising to over £101k for a GTS at the end of production in march '99. They were very much in demand as I recall, but I don't remember any going for silly money. Robert.
