Previously owned by my friend George Shelley. He lost track of it many years ago. Anybody here know the car? George doesn't "do" the worldwidenetweb, and I'm sure he'd like to know more about the car. I'll pass any information on to him.

    Thanks.

    Jack.

My favorite part about this ebay listing is that 1% will be added to high bid and it will then be donated to charity!

"A 1% buyer's premium, will be added to the highest bid and will benefit the American Concours Foundation, to endow project grants for Kinderplatz of Fine Arts of Fort Worth, TX and the Retreat of East Hampton, NY."

Not sure if I am reading this correctly, but does this not mean that even if the reserve is not met and car not sold that the charity is still getting their 1% donation on the high bid price?

Very cool deal and very kind of the listing agent if this is the case!

Also a bit curious abou the Los Angeles contact number, 3rd party listing agent and car being located in Pennsylvania. Coordinating a PPI might be a bit of challenge.

    Cheers,

    Bill

I think they are dreaming of the "winning bid" Mr. Noon, where there's PLENTY of $$$ for everyone!!!

It seems to me that Ebay Motors is the wrong venue for a car of this quality and significance. Really knowledgeable brokers like Bill Noon or Michael Sheehan or David Gooding would be better positioned to match seller and buyer, almost certainly get a better price, and still reserve a contribution to charity. They add real value: I believe it's called "marketing."

I was thinking the same thing. This car would be better served being marketed by someone who know this car and know buyers for this car. It has good history, noted damage but is absolutly stunning. Very very cool car.

Beautiful car. I like the idea of giving 1% to charity. Hope it goes for a good price.

    This is incorrect.

The car probbally will not sell on ebay, but for $50 the worldwide exposure is phenomenal.

Best marketing tool in the industry

The same vendor is now offering a 507 BMW Roadster located in Japan but apparently it will arrive and clear customs before auction ends and the car will already be in Torrance, California and have both a Japanese and California Title.

That would be a pretty neat trick if the vessel is on the water, clears customs, owner is able to preserve Japanese Title and get a new California Title all in the next four days.

If he can do that, I want him on my staff because shipping can run usually 21 days on the water. Customs can be three to five days so long as the car does not go to secondary or X-Ray. We have always had to surrender the Japanese title to get a new California title and they can take anywhere from four weeks to several months.

The same statement about donating 1% of high bid (not winning bid) is listed on this auction.

I had a client who is a lawyer at the shop yesterday read the listing and he believes they are making a binding statement.

"A fully US tax- deductible 1% buyer's premium, will be added to the highest bid and will benefit the American Concours Foundation, to endow project grants for Kinderplatz of Fine Arts of Fort Worth, TX and the Retreat of East Hampton, NY."

He emailed me this morning and said the American Concours Foundation has provided the vendor a letter stating that they expect the donation only upon the sale of the vehicle.

Like Tom said clever marketing for next to nothing.

In any case, I would love to have both cars but painted in any combination other than what they are in currently.

    Cheers,

    Bill

    What is the history?
What I have found is rebodied in steel after being stuck between two bridge abutments in a (salt water?) swamp and then another time after rocking and rolling loose in a container across the ocean.
Was it redone in steel or alluminum the second time?
Does it have any race history?

Interesting combination of charities. I don't know the Fort Worth group, but the Retreat is a small shelter for for battered women in the Hamptons. I know it pretty well, having donated clothes and toys, and it's a great help to the community. Good to see.

Tell us more about the bridge abutments and the salt water swamp.......that shows up somewhere?

    Or maybe 'common knowledge"??

It's very pretty now, and looks to be headed for top money...

    Ah...thanks!!

I guess 'no big deal' to rectify at Classiche, if it really bugged the buyer......understandable in the States at the time certainly.....

There may be some errors in the listing. There were no bridge abutments involved in the crash per se...the car was crashed into a mangrove stand on Card Sound Road in the Florida Keys. An employee of George Shelley's company was an aluminum fabricator (WW2 Army Air Corps type) and repaired the car in aluminum, not steel. A subsequent owner rebodied the car in steel. This information comes directly from George. George also doubts that this is the last inside plug car, although he isn't sure about that. The seller or seller's agent did not contact George for verification, and so the other owners may not have been contacted for confirmation either.

The auctioner said the sides are steel and the rest aluminum.
Was the whole car rebodied in steel the last time?
Has this car ever been raced?
On an aluminum bodied car are any of the inner structures such as the firewall also aluminum?

Google Card Sound Road. That is where he would have crashed the car. It runs parallel to US 1 (the Over Seas Highway) and is where Ocean Reef is located. There are several little creeks that you cross over on Card Sound, and one really big bridge.

Hope he didn't crash at night. It is a secondary road at best and not well traveled, especially at night.

There's a reason that the dashes were painted (wrinkle) black, and it has nothing to do with esthetics.

There are enough red flags on this 507 Series I to
stop a NASCAR race cold in it's tracks.

No sooner did this example show up on my radar
a few days before this thread was started, I was
contacted by a guy named Xavier Magnun who's
area code and number show up as being from
    Long Island, New York.

Xavier was most interested to speak over the phone
but was/is on his way to the Gullwing Group's event
    in Saratoga Springs this weekend.

Soon after this, the 507s listing was removed from
eBay despite there being several days left in the
    bidding.

Some more subtle digging and this 507 shows up on
the Canadian portal brokerage site, the Car Experience
(thecarexperience.com) with a few pics and generic
    description of the 507.

I decided to see what the story is there and requested
information on the 507 from The Car Experience and
    just received this reply:

his BMW 507 is currently in Japan but will be shipped to the US in October.
This BMW 507*is the 12th one produced and bears serial number 70.012.
    *
It was also one of three models shipped to the in US in February 1957.
    *
Only 34 BMW 507 Series 1 models were made.
    *
    70.012 is equipped with its original V8 3168cc engine # 40020 and a 4-speed manual transmission.
    **
Finished in Feather White over bright red leather with a black soft top.
    *
After spending several decades in the USA, the car was purchased in 1977 by a* Japanese collector and shipped to Japan where it remained until*today.*70012 is*currently being*shipped back to Los Angeles and will be available for inspection there.
    *
It*comes with both Japanese and California Titles and black California*plates
    *
    39,584 original miles
    *
Feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.
    *
    Best Regards,
    Rayda Sinni

To be sure, the red flags are most definately up now
not only due to the car's journey from Japan to
the U.S. but all the players who's hands which seem
    to be in the deal.

If the Japanese owner could be reached, he may be
interested to know what's become of his $950k 507.
