Dino Saga 070513 _ Cracked Wheel

Went in the hills for a photo shoot and pushed things a little. Much fun but next morning left rear tire was soft. Looked everything over and got out the Dawn and water sprayer. No bubbles anywhere that I could see. Oh well, jack it up and pull the wheel. Laid wheel down, inside up, and sprayed again. Regular volcano of bubbles just outside of hub. Bubbles were starting 3/4” out into the inner spinning. Time to pull out the spare.

The original Cromodora wheel and tire were waiting and had some air. Rubber was pretty stiff, tread was narrow and pattern looked more like an off road tire than a modern sticky. Ran it up to 30 psi and bolted it on. Could not resist taking a few shots of the combination. Rear shot shows the reason I rave about my Dino’s cornering. Lots more rubber on the road and much stiffer sidewalls.

Took wheel to tire shop and had them remove tire. Took mess home and pulled wheel apart. I had put a bead of red silicone over the original seal many years ago. This crack had gone way beyond original seal or my backup. I’ve told you that the car was raced before I bought it and the Gotti wheels were involved. Looks to me that the left rear wheel got banged up many years ago and in the process of straightening it, the spinning was put on a lathe and got away. Somehow one hole was almost ripped out and huge strains were set up around that hole. 30 years of stress have worked a crack from the inside of the spinning, across the bad hole and out into the center section of the wheel. Should not be a big problem to fix. I redid the left front wheel 15+ years ago when it was in much worse shape. I have been lucky to have worked with some master TIG welders, machinists and heat treat specialists. The spinnings are dead soft and weld easily. We heat treated the front wheel and might have to do it to this one. Will let the welder make the call after he is done. If the wheel is clamped securely during welding there should be no significant distortion. I expect that hand clean up with a sander should get things back in shape by the end of the week. Hope the spare hangs in there.

Had a blast in the hills. Found a spot for the cameraman to stand clear on the outside of a turn. There was a turnout ¼ mile above and another ¼ mile below. I did lazy eights until I got dizzy while he shot. Mountain backdrop going one way and ocean on the other. Can’t wait for some proofs. Hit many locations and shot about 450 shots between 2 and 5 PM. Definitely time for a beer when we got back to the clubhouse. It was one of those days of the typical Santa Barbara temperature inversion. 90 degrees at 2000 ft and 70 degrees at sea level. We had been playing up high and the Sierra Nevada Pale Ale tasted wonderful.

Oh well, somebody has to do the duty.

Hehe, the blacked out bottom on the rear (2nd pic) is not equal left and right, I remember how you wrote about it before the recent respray. Just teasing. Beautiful car, I always read your saga.
