The last thing I (and indeed this forum) need is another discussion about various oils. Having said that, I have been given 10 liters of castrol 10w60 full synthetic oil. Doing a bit of research shows that this oil is recommended for later model Ferrari’s and many other cars of a similar nature. I know that the correct oil is a 5w40 so please no “check the manual” comments. My car has over 50,000 kilometers on the odometer. The oil I’m thinking of using will be slightly thicker which in my opinion would be a good thing. Thank you all in advance.

people always overthink about oil weight. manufacturer recommends, but there is no way they know if you live in Death Valley or Alaska. They have no idea how you drive your car, if you track it or take 3 mile commute. If you live in Death Valley, 20w50 is too thin. If you live in Alaska, 0w20 is probably too thick.

10w60 have caused a ton of issues with BMW, many believe it causes the infamous rod bearing failure with those engines. Those particular engines have tighter than normal rod bearing tolerances. so 10w60 was way too thick for a BMW owner living in cold part of the world and for those owners who don't take time before revving the snout out of it.

if you track your 360 AND you take your time doing warm up, 10w60 is a great choice. if you live in cold part of the country or are lazy with warm up, I would go with 0w40, which is good for 90% of cars. For those who track their cars, good choice would be 5w50.

    my 2 cents.

Thank you for the response. I’m definitely not in a cold part of the world, and it rarely gets ridiculously hot either. Melbourne Australia to be specific. I’m also pedantic about a decent warm up period. No track work ever. Just a weekend cruise with my wife over several hours in decent weather. Im confident the 10w60 will be fine.

If you don’t track your car (or live in Dearh Valley Australia equivilant) I see zero reason for running 10w 60.

For street driving, It would be rare to go over 240F oil temp. But For track cars (I have 4 right now), many hit 290-300F (Vette, Spec Miata, GT350, etc) on regular basis. It makes sense to use thick oil then.

    +1.

No reason at all to do that. I use 10w60 in my M3 (factory specs), but wouldn't put it in the Ferrari.

No problem with 10W-60 for normal use except it is too thick at start and too thick once warm. The start part induces a lot of wear in a tight tolerance engine.
