I'm in the middle of changing my t-belts on my 75 gt4 and I've decided to replace the cam seals while I'm at it even though they look ok (one might be weeping slightly) they are nearly 10 years old.

My question is can the cam seals be replaced from the pulley side (with cam pulleys and valve covers off of course) and the camshafts in situ? Or must the cams come out?

At a minimum IIRC, the cams must be lifted on the sprocket end to pull the old seal and replace with a new, at least on a QV.

Yes, on a 2V, the cam seals can theoreticly be changed w/o even pulling the valve covers. Would take a bit of finesse to remove the old ones & keep from nicking the mating cam surface. Would need a metal ring to press the new ones in place w/o bending them. Then you have to make absolutely certain you re-pin the cam gears in the same cam & cam gear holes.....

On a 4V, the cam seals are mounted in a housing ring that's retained with a large o-ring. While the seals hypotheticly could be changed like on a 2V, the o-ring would be as old as the seals & would have had a bit of yanking around while the seal was being changed. The o-rings are often leaking before the seals do. Not worth trying on a 4V.
