Has anyone had any luck tracking down generic 1-3/8" i.d. fuel hose to replace those two 4" long rubber hoses connecting the crossover tube to the saddle tanks on a 308? I want to try and avoid paying $30- $40 each for OEM's if I can help it. Most hose I've found is only rated for "filler neck" and not for 24-7 submersion in gasoline (so say the mfg.'s).

    Bob,
That's a great question...and the answer is a resounding no! Many have tried using generic NAPA crap, Vulcoflex coolant hoses, wet marine exhaust hoses and on and on. And many have had fuel leaks which lead to engine bay fires. Actually, quite a few cars have been lost to improper materials being used in a critical locations. As you know, Ferrari is one of the few manufactures that has horizontal fuel lines; in essence, a hose where fuel is always present. As an ex-physicist, per your profile, you should see the obvious design and material concerns, particularly considering the damaging nature of ethanol so ever present in our fuels. So, it really comes down to your personal safety versus a few dollars.

So, to best answer your question, you have two safe choices:
The first being the outstanding hoses from Scuderia Rampante.
The second choice would be the factory hoses which are actually in the $80-$90 each range, but you really don't know how long they've been sitting on the shelf.

Just to clarify for those that are unclear of the difference...filler neck hose is not in constant contact with gasoline. Those 4" lines under the car that connect your fuel tanks together are. So when the hose manufacturer states that their fuel hose is not designed to be submerged, I suspect that they've done actual testing on this subject, considering the liability for incorrectly using their product is well, astronomical.

    David,
Thanks for the info. SR does not seem to sell JUST the two hoses alone. I don't need the whole "kit". I'll have to call them to see if they will break up the kit. The other three venues are T. Rutlands and Superperformance & Ricambi. Sp's #101468 at 15.95 pounds almost seems too cheap (what do you think?)! Any insight if those hoses are also good to use?
BTW - my old hoses have a white stripe and some numbers (PR756*9646*90.81 I think) that are too faded to see clearly. They seem fine inside but are showing slight cracking at about 1/4" of the leading edges beyond the clamp marks (I know I know....)

I too try and save money on most parts, and did so on the cross over hoses as well (marine spec 1 3/8th id etc) After trying to fit them on for over an hour trying various lubes as well as heating them up I finally gave up and ordered the Scuderia Rampante hoses...Top quality, took only a couple min. to get them on and more importantly the peace of mind was well worth the purchase price.. Just my 2 cents worth

    Cheers

more support for Dave here on this, please don't ask him to split up the hose 'kits' it's already hard enough to keep in production and I seem to recall Dave mentioning not wanting to deal with the hassle of by the 'foot' sales.

all that aside, the hoses are over engineered to what's available anywhere! and I mean anywhere, Dave managed to get the hose mfg to fabricate a hose that is not in production for any supplier or entity that will withstand the abuse of ethanol fuels. ethanol is so caustic to fuel lines and containers that transporting it is far more stringent than std fuels. exposure to air starts the hygroscopic process.

If ethanol was not in fuel I wouldn't be too concerned with the hose, most marine hoses would be OK. ethanol changed all that, and hose mfg are not making hose that will withstand ethanol due to cost. most all new vehicles are teflon rigid lines and bladder tanks.

fuel leaks are a life safety issue, not something I'd ever cut costs on, esp in an older Ferrari.

Ferrari BBQ's are no fun :(

The OEM part from Ferrariparts is 15.87 GBP so thats slightly less than the Superformance price. Whether its any good is another question...

Never had any issues with Superformace parts. Always have been top notch.

That being said I have the Helms hoses.
