Guys, I have researched this topic quite a bit on the various F-club websites and chat rooms and have decided that a 0W weight oil makes sense (and synthetic) but unclear on -20 or -30. What is your thoughts, -20 for winter and -30 for summer (Indiana)? http://www.focfl.com/tech/articles/oil.html Thanks! Greg
Hey Greg I was hoping to be able to use Mobil 1 0W 40 because i have cases, its whats in every one of my vehicles. But, the service facility that did my extensive major(s) told me that Mobil 1 5W 30 is in there and recomends i keep it that way. I wont be driving my car in the winter and will change my own oil (maybe), in the spring with what i take out.
Since neither of the 0 weight(yes I know it's not a weight) oils provides much in the way of lubrication protection for the flat tappet, non-hydraulic lifters, I would suggest something with a greater ZDDP concentration which is what was found in oils of the vintage that our cars were built. Cam spalling, and lifter damage is almost assured with any 0 weight oil due to the lack of ZDDP additives. M1 15W-50 synthetic, or Castrol 15W-50 syn-tec or 5W-50 Edge both have increased levels of ZDDP which will prevent cam spalling or lifter damage. Of course, you could use a 0W oil with an additive ZDDP, but I'm not recommending any 0W oils for use in a Mondial anyway. http://www.castrol.com/castrol/genericarticle.do?categoryId=82915470&contentId=7032644 No affiliation with Castrol, I just refuse to use a Mobil product after their fiasco with Mobil 1 aviation oil that destroy a few hundred aircraft engines.
Doc, Am i alright with M1 5W40? and speaking of oil... whats the best way to check it? I understand HOT but running or not? I keep getting different readings
Not running because the oil will be all over, engine has to be off to get a good reading on stick. I use Castrol Syntec 10W-40 and it works great. btw, here is a really good write up on Oil: http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showpost.php?p=141034550&postcount=13 See OM recommendations on oil maintenance. thats what i thought, but read somewhere to read while running. i thought just maybe the dry sump engine was different.
I don't think any Mondial has ever had a dry sump engine from the factory. None of the 3.0 are dry sump that I know of. The engine should be run for a few minutes, then shut off and checked for level. 5W-40 has 1200 PPM of ZDDP which should be great for the engine. I'm just not a fan of Mobil oils, but it looks like a suitable oil.
My apologies. A dry sump engine should be run, then shut off to check the oil. I don't know much about the t models. Does the engine still have flat tappet, and non-hydraulic? Maybe all my advice was for naught...
check out this web page regarding motor oil: http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/motor-oil-101/ A lot of oil articles refer back to this information. My opinion: Make sure there is recommended amount of oil in the motor pan/sump tank. For anything less than extreme conditions, i.e. racing, extreme low/extreme high ambient temperatures, any major brand oil close to recommended multi-grades/weights/numbers will be acceptable. I have used a lot of Torco and Mobil. Jerry DRG
