    I had a very nice chat with Ferrari and showed them my Le Mans Documents. They said that they switched both the chassis plates and the engines to match carnets at various times and that they believed their records are correct. Interestingly the Crew Chief of 0856/0858? at Le Mans 1967 talked about switching the chassis plates in the 0846 pdf on page 104. http://www.glickenhaus.com/jim/project.pdf

    We're still left with 0858's damaged tail at Brands Hatch. The Fog of Time...

    Jim of the existing P4's you have p3/4 LS has one Walter's was a p4 now a 330 Can Am

    How many really did exist how many still do? As you know I have spent quite a bit of time with LS's car Tink it would be a great shot to get em together...

    Hi Jim,

    Did you ask the factory what engine would have been in 0846 when they scrapped it?
    What was the engine number and n# stamped on the engine that you bought from David Piper on your car?
    You must have photographed it before the restoration. You have published all kinds of "Le Mans" stamps with respect to the car before. We know that you did not buy the car on the basis of it being 0846, so what was the chassis tag on the car when you bought it? Do you have any photos of the 0900 chassis tag? How did it become 0846 for the purpose of presentation to the New York Department of Motor Vehicles?

    All of that info is in the 0846 thread and the cited pdf. If after reading those you have any questions I'll be happy to answer them in that thread.

    The only original existing P 4 is 0856.

    0858 is a 350 Can Am.

    0860 is a 350 Can Am with a replica P 4 body mounted to it.

    0846 is what it is, currently a P 3/4.

    0844, 0848, 0850, and 0854 are 412P's

    While 0844 was rebodied in the day as as 412P Can Am it's engine and chassis weren't modified. It's currently rebodied as a 412P. In the day 0844 and 0848 began as a P3 and were changed by Ferrari into a 412P. 0850 and 0854 were originally 412P's never P 3's. In the day 0846 began as a P3 and was modified by Ferrari (engine/chassis/body) into a P 3/4.

    As an aside 0860's original P 4 body is currently mounted on David's 0900 as is one of 0858's spare 350 Can Am motors.
    0858's original P 4 Spyder tail is currently mounted to 0846. 350 Can Am's have different engines with different Typo stampings, modified chassis, different bodies, and different wheelbases. (note how far back 0858's rear wheel is in the wheel wheel vs 0856.)

    When LS's car was being restored up the road I knew it was but the fog of not having coffee in the house faded my gray cells

    LS's car at pebble a couple of years ago...

    oh well can't find the image now

    I will probably join David Stockman in the wood shed for this but my feeling is that if 0858 had been offered as the original P4 that it was with a Classiche acceptable restoration/rebuild back to the original P4 it would have greatly exceeded the high bid of E7.250M and may very well have been sold. just one man;'s opinion tongascrew

    "Rotting away under a tarp" is probably a dead-on-balls-accurate description of Mr. Walter Medlin's style of collector-car caretaking....LOL!

    I bid what I felt was a fair price for 0858. It wasn't accepted. The screen reported that other's bid almost 50% more than I did. That bid wasn't accepted either. Life goes on.

    The number bidded shows as I expected that the Can Am versions of these cars are the ugly and unloved duckling of the prototype Ferraris.

    The fact is the car is what it is, an unsuccessful lazy attempt by the factory to join in on a series that became very popular, which they had ignored. If they had done a decent job of it things might be different, but you can just see they really didn't give a cr@p. It was marketing driven ...

    At the risk of speaking out of turn here...Lets all face the fact 0858 is no longer a P4 and hasnt been for nearly 4 decades, its a Can Am, which I would think would make it unique, yes it wasnt that successful in the Can Am series. To me turning this car back into something it really isnt i.e a P4 would make no sense at all, unless of course one was trying to make money frome the sale.

    I do wonder though what exactly Mr Medlin wanted for the car....

    I tend to agree here. It was a last minute attempt by the factory to make a statement in CanAm. They did it before putting untested 6 cylinder engines into Monza chassis thinking they could beat the 300SLRs. I like to think of 0858 as a P4 and always will. just one man's opinion tongascrew
