"Cidade de Deus" (City of God) I've actually driven past the favela in Rio de Janeiro that this movie is based upon.
Keith, You're lucky you got past it and that it wasn't, "Put burning tires across the freeway and loot the motorists", day! DL
movies that make me think : Schindler's list La Vita é Bella SE7EN 8mms Arlington Road Irreversible Scent of a woman Family Man
I suppose "disturbing" can be interpreted in different ways. Movies with disturbing themes and disturbing scenes : - Schindler's List - The Pianist - Casualties of War (this was one of the saddest movies I've seen. Every man, especially those going into combat, should be made to watch this. It's a powerful cautionary tale about what can go on when soldiers acquire the idea that they're entitled to do anything they want in a foreign land they're at war with). - 8 mm Movies with unconventional themes that are not in and of themselves disturbing, but the manner of execution can be considered disturbing : - A Clockwork Orange (includes several scenes that I would consider disturbing because of the juxtaposition of the repulsive (rape) with the cheerfully mundane (singing "Singing in the Rain"). That was a powerful scene). - Apocalypse Now (I thought the movie was dragging on interminably, but there were some highlights. Robert Duvall's famous cavalry assault on the village with "Ride of the Valkyries" booming in the background was brilliant, and disturbing. The final few minutes showing the extent of Kurtz's depravity were also excellent). Movies with very graphically disturbing scenes (violence, torture) : - Faces of Death - Death before Dishonour (a pretty intense "hand drilling" torture scene) - Marathon Man (dental torture !) - The Serpent and the Rainbow (multiple gruesome and disturbing scenes, including the tarantula walking all over Pullman's face in the coffin, but the one that stuck most in my mind was the ...ahem..."scrotal impalement". The most painful part is the leadup, with Pullman strapped in that chair and the Haitian torturer just playing with him, "I want to hear you scream !"
Thought provoking, but not really disturbing are Clockwork Orange and Full Metal Jacket. Love these 2. The most disturbing is probably the Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the new one, only that I watched). Would be another carnage stupid flick ... if it wasn't inspired from real facts! That was really like ... "oh ****" ... LeatherFace ... MUUHAHAHAHA The Mothman Prophecies also freaked me out a bit ... Schindler's List ... definitely the most dramatic movie of all time. Close second comes La Vita è Bella (with Roberto Benigni) ... same background, same sick feeling when you're done watching it. Also "C'est arrivé près de chez vous", belgian flick ... that was really disturbing when I watched it (around 14). Some serial killer is followed by a camera crew, and explains how he goes on to kill people, casually saying "I'm not used to killing kids" while suffocating a 6 y/o with a pillow. I think that's the same movie where he dumps the bodies from a cliff into a lake, and they empty it at the end of the movie and the whole bottom is covered by white bags ... freaky. edit - it's only a movie script (not actual murders!) but the way it is filmed (kinda amateurish and instantaneous) makes it really good.
Gothika / The Ring / 28 Days Later - a little disturbing for me Lion King - Im not kidding, when i saw this I was young and the death of Mufasa affected me for weeks Some Italian movie (cant remember the title) On a channel called Showcase, it showed some hot broad squirting her breast milk into some little boys (about 11 yrs old)mouth, that had a crush on her. In another part the boy was walking by a womens clothing store and was watching them all through the window so they flashed him. weirdo stuff Texas chainsaw massacre - I didnt really know anything about the story when I watched it (the new version) So I thought the movie was alright, i enjoyed it, then the ending came and freaked me right out
I'm suprised nobody mentioned Ken Park. It can't be shown in the USA by law I believe, and you shouldn't watch it if you can't see any nude private parts. If you do not have a problem with nude private parts, and you "like" disturbing movies, go watch this one. Can be found on Kazaa. When I mean disturbing, I do not think about heads being ripped off, or people that get hit by trains. I think of those movies that show "normal" people in very, very weird conditions
The Shining Jacobs Ladder Mothman Prophecies freaked me out also, then freaked me out more when I read up on what parts were fact and what parts embellishment. Though I didn't sit through much of it, didn't care for Hellraiser either.
Re: Torture This brought to mind the scene in "The English Patient" where Willem Dafoe is being verbally interrogated by German captors and asks for medical attention and the presiding Nazi officer calls for a nurse. A very pretty woman in traditional Islamic dress comes in and very cooly and expressionlessly chops off his thumbs with an old fashioned straight razor. Stomach churning to say the least. And, Willem Dafoe also brings to mind "The Last Temptation of Christ". In this film, which was controversial for no good reason, the cinematic portrayal of Roman methods of execution was not as exquisitely brutal as in "The Passion of The Christ", but very convincing nonetheless. Lawrence Olivier's performance in "Marathon Man" does stick with me, after many years. Very disturbing. And, of course, the execution of Mel Gibson's William Wallace character by "drawing and quartering" in "Braveheart" was an outstanding conclusion to an outstanding piece of work. LITERALLY stomach churning!
I'm glad someone bumped this back to the top. I'd like to add: Donnie Darko Just the image in my head of Frank the bunny is enough to make me shudder. -DC
Most disturbing film? That film found on your tongue the next morning after a lot of whiskey and cigars... bleeeech
Almost forgot about Meet the Feebles... it's hard to imagine that the sicko that created this went on to do the Lord of the Rings trilogy. It's basically a spoof of the Muppet Show.. bunch of puppets who have a variety show, but it's a more 'realistic' approach. They have a drug dealing producer, actresses who do pornos afterhours, a rabbit with aids, a fly who eats turds, etc... weird stuff. -R
Not knocking the trilogy, but how is this hard to imagine? Most of the people I have met who are into the "fantasy" genre are usually messed up in the head somehow. Deep-rooted psychological problems, IMHO. Tolkien is pretty much the ring-leader in that realm, so it's easy to assume... Ah, who am I fooling, I even liked little Frodo(I think I liked that elf archer better though). -DC
High Tension was a really wierd movie, French language w/subtitles. I always thought the chainsaw scene in the beginning of Scarface was a little disturbing. Cheers, Aaron '82 GTSi
Some people told me The Cell was disturbing, but I thought it was pretty cool. Very cool set and wardrobe designs. Edit: ^This thread is over 2 years old, what are you doing?! lol jk
I'm not one to seek out something morbid to satisfy some idle curiosity but I felt I needed to watch one of the beheading videos from iraq. After waiting several days after downloading I finally gathered the strength to watch because I had to know what kind of enemy we are dealing with. I'm not a violent person but at that point I wish I were, and in a place and position to be extremely violent, without remorse. To our Troops out there on the front lines; thank you for being there, for doing what needs to be done and for showing as much restraint as you have already.
Just wait till you see this. Salò o le 120 giornate di Sodoma (120 Days of Sodom). Plot Outline: "Four fascist libertines round up 9 teenages boys and girls and subject them to 120 days of physical, mental and sexual torture. Set in the Nazi-controlled, northern Italian state of Salo in 1944, four dignitaries round up sixteen perfect specimens of youth and take them together with guards, servants and studs to a palace near Marzabotto. In addition, there are four middle-aged women: three of whom recount arousing stories whilst the fourth accompanies on the piano. The story is largely taken up with their recounting the stories of Dante and De Sade: the Circle of Manias, the Circle of Sh*t and the Circle of Blood. Following this, the youths are executed whilst each libertine takes his turn as voyeur." It is banned in many countries. I believe the director was murdered shortly after release.
I don't think I will ever watch that video. I've had a few chances to watch, but I didn't even think about watching it. Just reading about what happened in the papers was more than enough to get me extremely angry at the pieces of **** that would do something like that.
