I there anyone else out there who owns a Bentley Turbo R? IMO the best luxobarge of its time (a view shared by Car magazine in 1990) and a milestone in the history of Bentley - after becoming nothing more than a badge-engineered R-R and falling to only 10% of R-R production in the Shadow era, this was the first model that re-established Bentley as the high performance alternative and ultimatley outsold its R-R stablemate by four to one.

Not sure what you want to know, but please ask any specifics and I'll try to reply.

I have had mine for over 20 years and fully intend to keep it for another 20, if I last that long!

You have hit the nail on the head: regular upkeep is the key. So, too, is regular use - they don't like being left alone for months on end.

They are now worth a fraction of what they cost originally, but servicing and parts are still just as expensive, so a lot of them have fallen into the hands of people who skimp on regular maintenance. Buy one of these, and, yes, it can be an expensive nightmare. Buy a good one, that has been regularly serviced by main agents in the early years, and good independent specialists more recently, and look after it, and you can enjoy many miles of rewarding motoring in a car that is beautifully appointed, supremely comfortable, handles pretty well for a large 30 year old saloon, and has a good turn of speed. It's no Ferrari, but it can be hustled along quite swiftly if the mood takes you. Its greatest attribute, however, is that it's the sort of car that makes you realise that there is no need to rush around like a madman, but that you can just sit back and let the world go by, as you relax in your "drawing room on wheels".

Advice? That's easy: buy one as soon as possible - life is too short to be without one for any longer than is strictly necessary.:)

Keep looking! You may have to check out quite a few before you find one that is worth buying, but analysis of the service records should enble you to eliminate the alo rans and avoid your wasting time and effort going to look at a stack of old dogs. Length of ownership and amount of money spent per year are also good clues - I would look for a car with average ownership of 5+ years and invoices averaging £3,000 / year in recent years to suggest a car that has been loved. Then its down to the usual visual inspection and PPI.

I love these cars but they are just so hard to find in good condition. I've looked for years. But they are still on my wish list! I also think that there is better selection in the UK. A lot of the Turbo R I see for sale in the UK look great compared to what I see for sale here in the U.S. Also, more color combo selection in the UK it seems. By and large, the cars for sale here in the US are tired and worn out with lack of maintenance. It is the classic case of all the good ones are not for sale.

I have owned this 1989 2XXXX series Turbo R since November 2024. It is nowhere as clean as Matt Farah's example above but it's all there and pretty much everything works!
