I think I've read on here before that I can opt out of an inspection sticker in NJ if a car is limited in its production run. Any other interesting NJ laws to know about? Front license plate is still mandatory, right?

Yes, that's called 'collectible' status. I'm working on it. Of note, you have to do it at time of registration, and you have to have a letter from either Ferrari or a collector club stating it's limited run status. I have not been able to produce this, but plan to use information I've gathered from FCHAT and cross my fingers. It's very well documented on the site.

Front plate is mandatory, I have been running without one on my sports cars for 30 years, hasn't been an issue unless I have got pulled over for something else, never got pulled over for that specifically, you will obviously need to have it on when you go to inspection.

I did also have to remove the tint off my side windows on a car that had tint when I purchased it, this is also documented what is acceptable.

The beauty of collectible status is tint away, remove the cats and go!

    other than that, congratulations!

Okay. so looks like I'll be trying to file for "collectible" status. Is the only "perk" of collectible status that you don't need a inspection sticker?

perk, yes, that's it as far as I'm aware. you are required to keep mileage to < 2 or 3k miles per year (I forget which) so that is a downside, they check it, I think every 5 years

Okay. found the spot for nj collector car.

    https://www.state.nj.us/mvc/vehicletopics/collectveh.htm

    What's weird is:

    1. "a letter from the vehicle manufacturer, recognized car club or a collector organization confirming the vehicle’s limited production status." I wonder what car clubs are recognized. There's isn't some magic list somewhere right? I'm curious if I could actually get something from ferrari.
    2. "purchase a voucher for a special decal to make the vehicle exempt from safety and emission inspection." Any idea what this "decal" is and where it has to be placed?

I also wonder if I can just go to a private inspection site and have them just give me the inspection sticker instead of applying it to the windshield.

    Regarding
1 - One of the members of the FCHAT (Allen - thank you again) was kind enough to get me connected to Ferrari Club of America - the end of it was they said they could not provide it but suggested going to Ferrari of North America in Englewood Cliffs and see if they could accommodate. I'm hoping to send them info from FCHAT and that will be enough.

2 - I am not sure, but I would imagine it would go where the inspection sticker would. Since collectible cars are in shows and what not, hopefully you can just carry with you and not have to adhere it to the windshield

dunno on the private inspection site question. good question though.

I can't say I've ever heard of a inspection waiver for any modern exotic in NJ. I understand it for classics where historical standards clearly do not apply (and likely can't even be tested) but modern cars are sold under modern regulations in the US. That said, the alternative is to simply skip a year or two rather than going every year..

if you can demonstrate that your car is 'collectible', ie limited run status, and it is not older than 25 years (in which case it would need to be antique status and also does not require to be inspected), it qualifies for 'collector' status in NJ which exempts it from needing to be inspected. as per the link above in post #5

Thanks everyone! Definitely learned a bunch.

One last question for you NJ folks. Do you all have inspection stickers on your windshield? I swear every time I see one (theres some guy in my town that drives one around) it never has the sticker. I thought that was just something you could somehow opt out of.

When you take the car to the official state inspection station (note that in NJ you can't get this done at a registered private shop like you can in NY), they normally apply the sticker while you wait on the sidelines watching them do the inspection..

I live in South Jersey and have all of my Ferraris inspected at private authorized shops after the new car inspection sticker runs out in 5 years. In my town I get it done for $75 and they hand the sticker to me to put it on the windshield since they figured us Ferrari owners are kindy picky.

Just find a local small town shop and speak to them about your car inspection and I'm sure they'll be accommodating.

Nice. Excuse my ignorance since I'm new to this =) but should I be looking for a place that does exotic car inspection or just any regular local car inspection place?

Any garage for inspections. Here in NJ it's now just what the OBDII system tells them is wrong. No mechanical inspections anymore
Correct in NJ. I've taken my cars into a private garage for the past 20 years. No problems. And they were careful with how the sticker went on.

And just a rehash- Here in NJ any car '95 & earlier no longer needs a state inspection and you need to remove the window tag (as it would be out-of-date). Of course, you are personally responsible for the safety of your car so you need to inspect it or have a shop do it. You will not get a sticker.

Man wanted for stealing $25K, inspection stickers from Brooklyn auto repair shop
NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A man broke into a Brooklyn auto repair shop on March 15 and made away with thousands of dollars and multiple New York State inspection stickers, police said.
The burglar used tools to open a safe once inside and stole $25,000, 40 New York State inspection stickers and other miscellaneous items,

I have a shop like that in Ocean county in NJ doing my inspection next week. Don’t want any of those state inspection people driving my car.

Been running my car in NJ with no inspection, no cats, and no front plate for 11 years. I was stopped once for a headlight out and another time due to the noise, but they basically just chatted with me about the car. My car doesn't see a lot of use these days. I think the in the past 7 years I've maybe but 3-4k miles on it.

When I bought my 430, the previous owner had no inspection sticker. I guess he did the same. I decided not to go that route and get an inspection sticker knowing my luck. I have been pulled over for side window tint on my Cayenne on a one lane road with the police car behind me (he never was on the side of me to be able to see my tint until he stopped me and walked around the vehicle, he was just looking for something and that's all he found).
