Agreed but that's the case for most luxury goods these days. Try buying a new Rolex, they are no where to be found unless way over list.

It's a different game with watches and bling you wear. Some people will do anything in order to bring that watch to an A-list party, and it takes zero effort to do so. I might be a bit prejudice here, but the world of such bling seems very much about showing off. Granted people do that with cars too, but it fakes more effort.

there is a show off aspect for sure but there are plenty of enthusiasts like me who appreciate the watch hobby. I tried to get the green 5711 to no avail. My dealer had 2 of them. Im easily in his top 5 customers and he had two. Its an insane watch for sure from a desirability perspective but not a chance in hell id pay over msrp for it.

It will be interesting how long this Pista stays at the asking price of 529 thousand. I have seen this car at at the dealer and word is they are not budging too much on asking. Not a spec for everyone.

I like this one as well but wouldn't have the balls to spec it.

Oh don't get me wrong, I appreciate a Patek as much as the next guy, and I'd be happy pay MSRP and a bit extra. It's more when you get into that level of paying 400+ grand, that's just nuts.

    Look at it this way.

An enthusiast will often know what the value actually is, and thus there's a limit to how crazy we will allow things to get. It's like when the 458 SA was nearing 800k. Sure, nice car, but nowhere near worth that as an actual drivers car. Like with the 5711, at silly money it becomes a status symbol and a show piece, and sometimes that for people with zero actual interest. Case in point. I've met a TdF owner who bought one when they peaked. I had to open the bonnet to convince him it was a V12 and not a V8. He bought it because his friend had bought a rare boat of some kind. I'm not really into watches, but I can appreciate them. I know a few people who are pretty serious collectors, and I know none of them would ever pay that for the 5711.

Id consider my self a pretty serious collector of Patek. I have what I consider a decent collection and not a chance in hell Id pay over msrp for the 5711. Frankly, I dont even like the 5711, I just wanted it for the novelty but it became pretty clear that this was going to be unobtanioum. Oh well.

Funny thing is your status at Patek is not judged by which sport watches you own- its judged by what else you have bought. any annual calendars? Any perpetual calendars. I have my grail piece that has been sitting at my dealer for 2 months. Im waiting till my birthday in August to pick it up. ITs probably not something you will see on the hands of a rapper or sports celebrity but its been my dream watch for as long as I can remember and I was finally able to get one. Your post is spot on!

So now that the 296 has been revealed, with an Azzento Fiorino pack- which means that we can once and for all hopefully kill any talk of a F8 VS- what happens to Pista? Does it become one of the most revered models out there? Is it just another car. Or somewhere in between. Im not talking about the price of the pista per say cause who the hell knows what is gonna happen to the price- Im talking in terms of it being a revered model or just another car.

The Pista becomes…invaluable and irreplaceable. The 296 GTB does nothing better than the Pista. Well, the 296 GTB does 0-200kph in 7.3 seconds compared to the Pista’s 7.6 seconds, if that means anything to anyone. It really doesn’t to me.

The Pista will be more fun to drive and IMO way better looking. I bet the sound will also be better. The 296 looks to be a very expensive daily driver sports car. Its not that special to me, especially for about $400K.

i think you hit the nail on the head. I really like the looks of it but it’s soft. The interior with al the tech is not for me. I want more hardcore. It will do well but I’m not dying to get one.

It doesn't mean anything to you because you have another car that'll do it in mid 6's :)

True, but I’m a weirdo. I have a couple other cars that do 0-200kph in 10.9 seconds (2005 Ford GT) and 11.8 seconds (2017 Dodge Viper ACR), but still I manage to love those cars just as much. The utility of crazy acceleration diminishes rapidly after a certain level is achieved. Kind of like breast size…
