I don’t have any way of telling which code this might be, and I know there are several possibilities, but does anyone have any experience with this? It’s a 2013 Cali-30 and I already tried shutting it down for a while and restarting. I also wait for the entire self test to complete before starting every time. Thanks

Dealer can read out the error. Seems like the two usual causes are bad battery or a fuel system problem. Took me 3 trips to the dealer to get sorted out. Fuel system. Software update fixed it.

You can also try a battery reset. Simple DIY. Disconnect battery for 10 minutes or so and reconnect. Owners manual should have reset instructions. The message will probably go away but might or might not come back. You may get lucky.

Well, the battery reset cleared the message and I got the ‘Check OK’ on the next start-up. We’ll see if it lasts, I use a good CTEK tender religiously when it’s not being driven, but the battery is dated 5/18 so it’s almost like the car is programmed to throw a code at exactly three years. Thanks for the tip.

I had that, turned out to be a fuel/evap issue. Did you recently gas up?
I got that message after fueling up and not tightening the gas cap enough.

Battery is another obvious possibility. 3 year old battery is another contender, as mentioned above...T

Good idea. I had just refueled but the cap was tight. I unscrewed it and tightened it down again anyway, just to be sure. And a new battery is on the way.

We changed the battery on our Cali 30 at three years. It seems to be the age at which they start to go!

I got this issue on my California 2010. This issue appeared 50% of each start.
I brought it to a mechanic guy and he replaced the evap leak pump /sensor.

Well, after the battery reset the light stayed out for three days but then showed up again today. My new battery is scheduled to be delivered in the next few days and after I install it I’ll let you know if that’s a permanent solution.

you might want to get a dealer to read out the error message. I kept suspecting the battery but it turned out to be a fuel system problem

Thanks, I plan to. There’s no dealer in the N.O. area, but there is a very reputable facility (Lindsey Automotive/Ferrari South) about thirty miles from me. When they did my annual service last Sept. they told me the battery was reading very slightly low. There were no problems back then, the battery was less than two and a half years old, the starter turned over immediately and strongly, there were no warning lights and no mysterious malfunctions with the retractable top, etc. I drive the car several times a week (about 2500 miles a year) and I was already using a CTEK tender/charger at all times the car wasn’t being driven, so I didn’t take any action back then. But I’ll be installing a new battery this weekend and then I’ll have them check for any codes.

I have had this exact issue which was quite frustrating. Most likely a p420 code. Catalytic converter. The cars have a tendency for a lot of carbon buildup. A lot of stop and go traffic driving and I was a bit easy on the car as it was my first Ferrari. I would point your mechanic to this and pull the code to see. My guy did a scope of the cat and saw they were still in good shape but the car had a rough idle and a lot of carbon build up. He was able to clean it the best he could and his instructions were to drive it hard. You may be lucky with the battery but given the year I would think p420 is the code. It won’t come up all the time as the cat test diagnostic happens last and requires different speeds etc. that was the frustration 3 or 4 start ups and I was fine and then the 5th it would throw the code. You cannot damage the car but I hated driving it with this and the car would act funny with this code. I got it clear and it was stable but I ended up moving to a 2015 Cali t in November. I wish you luck on getting this sorted. I would invest in an obd reader. It is a suggestion from some of the vets here that I adhered to and it proved to be invaluable. Gives you a clear sense of what is going on.

Thanks for all that. I installed the new battery Saturday and the warning went away that day and the next, but showed up again Monday morning. I called and made the service appointment this morning, and sure enough the warning was gone when I started the car in the early afternoon. I drove to a restaurant with my wife, shut down for an hour and a half then drove to the hospital to visit a friend, shut down for another hour then back home. All with no warning light, but I suspect it’s going to show up again before too long. Funny you should mention the cats, because occasionally if I shut down for only a short time I’ll get a ‘converter temp’ warning on restart until everything settles down again. I also suspect carbon build up to some degree because during the warm up after first start of the day it will stumble a little until it gets to full operating temp. I’m going to pull one spark plug on each bank tomorrow to see how they look.

I ordered this code reader today. Do I need to reference a guide for what each code means, or is it self explanatory in the readout on the device? One other question, on an intermittent warning like I have, will the code remain in memory or disappear when the warning light goes away?

My recent experiences with engine diagnostic readouts is that the codes are saved with time stamps even if the dash warning no longer comes up. A cleared condition will still be in the onboard record until deleted.

The codes will stay until cleared. Some readers will have blinking lights showing what is being looked at like evap or cat that shows you the car is still going through the diagnostic. The longer it takes to test and get a good result the more likely you will get the warning light. If you pull the code and look on line you can get what it pertains to. Keep us posted.

I've answered about that 1 week ago on this post. Was only $120 to repair. A engine light is NEVER a battery issue.

And there is no point to buy a OBD reader just to clear the code. It will re appear if the issue is not solved.

Normal starts (no warnings and a good “Check Ok” message) for nine days straight after the new battery installation. So far, so good. I’ll have the code reader in a day or so and post again when I see what it has to say.

Ok, I connected my code reader and got the info shown below. Research indicates that module $7E8 references Fuel/Air Intake. You can refer to my other thread here (https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/how-do-these-plugs-look-to-you.643610/#post-147955117) about my current spark plug condition which would seem to have a direct bearing on this code. I cleared the code, and after I perform the carbon cleaning procedures recommended in that other thread I’ll run the diagnostics again as well as pull the plug again to look for any change / improvement. Btw, the plug I checked in that other thread is from cylinder #1, and since cylinders 1 - 4 are on the passenger side I‘ll assume that that is Bank 1.

Hi have you had any other engine system failure? I would like to know what it may be or any advice on costs. I plan on taking it in to be looked at, engine sounds really scary upon starting major rumble
