Just sold my 2005 F430 which I owned since 2013. I bought it with 16000 miles and sold it with just under 40000 miles. It was completely stock except for radar detector, clear bra, tint, and lowered height when I bought it. Here's what happened during my ownership.

Clutch - was original with 33% wear and 44% worn when I sold it. I did not track the car. I lived in a pretty steep hill for the first year. Used paddles, let the car downshift to a stop and left it on first in red lights. Had no problems with the clutch during ownership. So I used 11% to drive 24000 miles; at this rate I can't see the clutch wearing out with normal driving (provided that some other part in the clutch did not break and require servicing).

Headers - replaced with MKII before I bought the car. No problems again. Hairline crack found in the weld during routine service and welded.

Routine service - had full fluids changed every year. Did not have any leaks.

    What broke:
F1 hydraulic hose ruptures just as I was pulling into the community where I live. I was able to drive into the garage and had the car flat bedded for repair. The hose was put in with a kink at the factory which caused it to rupture over time. I understood that later cars had a different route for the F1 line to avoid the stress where it broke.

Potentiameters broke as I was driving to the mechanic for my annual service. I was able to drive to the mechanic so the car never left me stranded.

F1 pump, tank and reply replaced during service for a check engine light. Everything worked fine before replacement, but worked so much better afterwards. I saw the flight flash briefly but the car seemed to work fine.

    Headliner sagged and was reglued.

    Routine preventative maintenance:
I replaced the battery twice. The car was always on a trickle charger at home.

Leather treated with Leatherique 1-2 /year. There was no pulling, hardening, or cracking with this regimen. I had hairline wear at the drivers seat bolster when I bought the car and it looked about the same when I sold it.

Sticky button - had some sticky buttons when I bought the car. I cleaned the window switch, the door handles, and the AC vents. Replaced the radio knob with new ones. The steering wheel surround I left alone.

Paint - no problems. The car had a clear bra in the front when I bought it. It wasn't a custom wrap but no one was willing to remove and rewrap it because of the possibility of paint damage. It looked fine without any yellowing after 8 years.

Alignment - was out of alignment when I bought it. It was supposed to have been aligned by my old mechanic but work was done incorrectly. Repeat at another shop kept the car straight for my ownership.

    Modification:
I disconnected the radar/laser detector. I installed the Scuding daytime running lights. Plug and play and really made the car look like a modern car. Highly worthwhile upgrade.

    Insurance:
Paid about the same as my GTI and Tesla.

    Gas:
Costco Premium - maybe got 12 miles / gallon or something.

    Miles:
I drove the car. No reason why F430 could not be daily driver, but doing so obviously depreciated the car steeply.

    Usability:
Car was lowered when I bought it so I had it put back to the factory height. It had more clearance than the 360 and I rarely had to worry about the bottom scraping.

So had some problems but overall a pretty reliable car during my ownership. Hope this helps for anyone wondering about the F430.

Thinking about either a 458 or vintage like 308. Any opinions?

Nice recap, there are more of these needed to give new owners insight.

I not a 458 fan, so no comment there.....with the 35 year gap between the cars mentioned, what are you really looking for? Usage, transmission, etc

I like the look of the 458 and that it's a modern car with all the safety features and such. I like the 308 for the simplicity, look, smallness, manual. Ideally I would like to have both. Gonna do some research, talk to owners, look at cars etc.

Both would make for a nice combo. My garage is kind of built that way.

Mine too. I do find that after an accident or two that were not my fault I am liking the idea of airbags and why there are 3 airbag cars in my cool car collection.

I almost got hit last year by a guy who ran a red light at speed when I was driving my aircooled 911.

    That was a scary moment.

    Thanks for sharing!

Can I ask how much less of a sale price your car sold for compared to one with say only 20k miles on it?

Like you I am an advocate of using the cars rather than looking at them. And I am willing to accept that using them means greater depreciation. But man it’s fun!

Curious what your experience with this was.

    Thank You and Cheers!

I sold to a dealer for 82500. I could have sold for more I think on Autotrader, consignment etc but would have taken more time and at some risk of potential 'buyers' wanting to 'test drive' and potentially breaking something or worse.

The lowest offer was a used car dealer offering 40K according to Kelly Blue blue. The consignment place thought it could retail for 100K in this market but also wanted me to pay an upfront fee and do a PPI at their shop - I'm confident on my car but not sure about a PPI at the dealer's shop as to whether this could lead to a lot of work being done for nothing.

I spent close to 20K for maintenance and repair in the time I owned it so definitely was not cheap - I'd say ended up costing about 1000 a month or so for everything, which is what my 360 cost. I don't remember exactly, but I think my Mercedes and Porsche also ended up being in the same ball park at the end of ownership.

Not sure how much more I could have gotten if it had 20K miles especially if I sold to a dealer.

Thanks I appreciate your candor. My 2007 Nero over Beige spider I have been offered 115 from both Ferrari dealer and a private party. I think like you if I advertised it and spent some effort in marketing would bring more. Ferrari dealer said retail on mine would be 125-130 for them.

    It has 19,200 miles.

So the delta for miles is considerable. But note that 115 on trade is different than straight sale to dealer. Another dealer offered me 113k outright sale.

Like you I don’t think it will influence how I use my cars however.

    Cheers!

I test drove a 2015 458 Spider yesterday. It was nice but too “Lexus Like” for me compared to F430.

May have been the standard seats?

    Honestly rethinking my F430 sale.

I think you meant replaced "relay" not "reply" in the post. Big thanks for sharing. Surprised nothing came up regarding the trans or engine mounts. If they were not already replaced prior to your purchase they likely went out by 40k miles.

    Thank you for the share.

I'm a new first time Ferrari owner (07 F430) and it helps plan what I'm in for....

Yes relay was preventative maintenance. Mounts were checked every service and were fine. Obviously just one example, but the car was better than expected compared to the horror stories on the forum.

Very helpful write up. An F430 is on my list of potential purchases.

Regarding the 308, I had an ‘85 and an ‘87 328, and if I could still drive a manual the 328 would be at the top of my list. Much improved over the 308, almost bulletproof, and parts costs are low by Ferrari standards. 0-60 in 6 seconds is slow today, but the sounds are terrific. The view over the front fenders is epic. Unless you want something collectible like a fiberglass ‘76 308, I’d go for a 328.

Late to this but about the daytime running lights. A kit is available for daytime running lights? Would like that for my 2002 360.

Like OP, no significant problems at all with my 360. Ball joints, trans bushing, raised back to OEM spec because of scrapping and shock bottoming, diy sticky fix, diy dash leather restretch as well as roof leather drop fix. All easy diy fixes and the rest, pretty much bulletproof for 11 years. Modena and stick so the two really big problem areas never existed for me.

I think most 360/430 cars are relatively trouble-free but all we read about is the bad stuff.

Another collectible option that is still under the radar is a Euro carbed 308 coupe.

    Interesting write up.

I bought my gated 05 430 Spider in 2015. It’s one of a few weekend cars so I haven’t racked up many miles: it had 9000 when I bought it, now a little under 12000.

I have had it serviced every year, at a main agent which is also a classic specialist (Joe Macari) and always to tell them to give it a proper check over.

I have just been looking through my records. The only thing that’s needed doing is the front brake pads, in 2016. I also bought a set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres (the best money you can spend on a car, and a real upgrade).

Aside from that, it’s just been the annual services and gone like clockwork. To date. Pretty good for a 16 year old Italian car.

the manifolds are MkIIs and fine. No roof issues. No nothing. Very impressed. So far.

Thanks for your post. I’m in the market for a F430 and posts like these are encouraging.
