Believe it or not, that was put there by the factory.

My car is a 1983 and I have a deluxe mahogany veneer version of the wooden trunk bottom. It has the same air gap and all. It looks like by 1985 Ferrari downgraded to some cheaper wood veneer in their trunk bottom spacer. Titch, titch.

 

If you were to disassemble the interior totally, you may well find more blocks of wood used as shims here and there.

Not a joke.

 

I found a block of wood under the little piece that covers the seam on the rear shelf. I'm not sure if it was factory or not.

Years ago, I found a wood shim under the instrument cluster on the dash.

Weren't the floors on F1 cars also made out of wood? So F1 technology is found in our cars!

 

I believe they used wood on the outside bottom just recently before going back to that metal one for the spark show.

Had something to do with clearance rules and only so much could be scrapped off after a race or qualifying. Couple mm only, if that.

This was just a few years back. Not long.

Extra thermal insulation on the US version cars to protect the rear trunk area from the (greater) heat from the cats below (I don't think it's used on the euro version cars). It is fairly lightweight, inexpensive, and has a high thermal resistance -- but still don't put ice cream in the rear trunk .

 

I recently serviced my AC system and I had to return all of the tools I borrowed from to complete the job including an extra brand new can of R134 I was going to donate to the next user. I packed it all in the trunk for the drive to our 308 breakfast. I remembered that the can said not to store over 120F. I put that can up front with me.

OTOH when an evening drive gets a little chilly and you pull a jacket out of the trunk, it's nice and toasty warm!

With a similar problem to solve, FIAT used a thick felt-type media bonded beneath a heavy rubber mat in the rear trunk of X1/9s.
Just a little down-market from its cousin’s mahogany piece.

 

You can coat the underside of this wood piece with sound/temperature dampening and it helps with any rattles or heat dissipation - still no ice cream in the back. Costco thermal coolers do work if you want to carry things.
