I worked for a radio station in Lake Village and was married there. Her tamales are excellent at well as the pies. Doe's Eat Place across the river in Greenville, MS has great tamales and even better steak. It's in a rough neighborhood and had security guards when I ate there.
"Doe's Eat Place across the river in Greenville, MS" **** I ate there about 35 years ago and it was rough neighborhood then. Doe's has done well since then with about a dozen franchise locations now. About five years ago, the wife live in Jackson, MS for a year doing a surgical trauma fellowship. The drive from Lake Village through the "Delta" to Jackson is a different world.
I worked at a TV station there and later a radio station. The Delta is the worst place I've ever lived!
Very interesting! I will let the wife know she inadvertently got the good stuff. Gearing up to make some corn tortillas tonight...T

Holy moley that's a lot of vittles! Scratch made corn tortillas 1.0 Nixtamalized masa and water. Added a little less water than the package calls for or else the dough gets gummy. Made pizza tonight. Shallot, mushrooms, a little bacon, diced ham, and pepperoni on top. I forgot I had a couple peppers in the fridge or they'd have gone on too. Oh and used pesto for sauce. Didn't plan on that but red sauce I had in the fridge had some mold. Pretty tasty. Image Unavailable, Please Login
For our anniversary dinner, we wanted an "authentic" Italian place (since the anniversary was of meeting in Amalfi). Google led me to Casa Mia on the outskirts of Scottsdale (on the way to Fountain Valley). This place had good reviews, and it delivered. A first-generation immigrant family runs the place. Parents and their adult children. They are from just over the hill from Amalfi, in Sorrento. They treated us like long-time customers and gifted us prosecco to start and tiramisu for dessert (I couldn't accept that generosity and added it back to the bill). The food was excellent, if not fully traditional (the saltimbocca was what I called "deconstructed"). They really cared about their customers' experience and did everything with warmth and passion. Honestly it was a great night for me simply to witness a group of people running a business of this quality. We had: - A scallop dish served with sauteed zucchini and lettuce, with a saffron cream sauce (excellent and unique) - Risotto with crab (not a traditional, heavy gluten style, rather the rice was loose and not sticky in any way. Heck they even put cheese in there!) - Saltimbocca - Tiramisu (excellent, a contender for best we have ever had.) Great night. There are a few Italian places that I like in PHX metro, but I'd recommend this place unreservedly. Just convection oven at 400. It's Margherita brand pepperoni stick sliced up. Good stuff. I love when it gets cupped and crispy like that.
Oh yeah, about 5 mins in. Wish Costco had uncooked corn tortillas. Can't beat the taste of fresh cooked though. And the house smells like a bodega! T
Last week in Scottsdale...so repeating a few favs. Yesterday was Carolinas. Beef crispy tacos and chorizo/potato burro. Super yummy. And what ambience Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Okay, caught up to today with this post... We got a Dosa craving from Jerry's Indian Food thread in silver...so we went to 2 South Indian only vegetarian restaurants today... Both were excellent, the first place was very casual, order at a counter, then seat yourself at a cheapo table surrounded by 100% Indian families (Ania was the only caucasian in the place), use only plastic fork and paper plate. Needless to say it was amazing! Second place had the appearance of your typical strip-mall indian place. But was veggie only and was highly rated for dosas. The reviews were correct. First two pics are the first casual place, their menu and the 2 dosa's we had there (top is a masala dosa, bottom is the paneer dosa). Third pic is the stripmall place and we had (on top) another masala dosa and on the bottom a mint/cilantro/potato dosa. All four Dosas were outstanding, and the sambar's were good too (first place was better in that regard). Hard to pick a favorite dosa, but the most flavorful was the mint one for sure. If after a Dosa in PHX metro, I'd go to Woodlands for the dosa and the experience. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Did up some tri-tip for family dinner. Cooked it a bit more done than I'd like but the rest of my family likes it that way. Did sou vide overnight then browned it on Sister's gas grill. Tasty although she doesn't have a sharp knife in her house so butchered it with a serrated knife. Image Unavailable, Please Login
