Funny story I guess... Tonight was at dinner with my wife - date night at new to us, nice restaurant... Wine list.. out of my first choice wine so I saw this bottle for 150 and thought - wow what a good deal.. and ordered it.

Apparently I need glasses as it was 750 - I was too embarrassed to bring it up at check time.. Luckily my wife just rolled her eyes. I realize that's a rounding error on this thread but thought it was funny and a good reason to go in for eye test lol.

Serious juice. The Haute Brion requires some serious decanting. I would do 1.5-2 hours on that or just let it age a other 10 years if you have the patience.

The Hundred Acre is spectacular. Extremely pronounced aromas and flavors. Tons of red and black fruit with powerful secondary and tertiary flavors as well. When you have a moment, take a look at the secret inscriptions at the bottom of the lower bottle supports in the OWC.

The Harlan is another amazing vino. May want to let it age a bit.

    I recommend the 2013, 2015, 2016 Dominus Estate.

Also, a taste off between a 2016 Bond, the Hundred Acre, and the Harlan would be tons of fun. Note the Bond is made from Harlan vines, so there will be some similarities. If you like Bond and Harlan, check out The Mascot. It’s made by the Harlan’s son using younger vines.

Almost forgot…The Scarecrow! You must have a very good friend sourcing these bottles for you. Can’t say I’ve tried it, but I have an OWC of 2018 sitting in my cellar. Very tempting.

Thanks, very helpful. I'll look at the box, did not know about the inscriptions. I am indeed lucky, a friend, serious collector gets allocations from most of the top-tier Napa wineries and shares when available. The only thing he won't share is the Screaming Eagle first flight for obvious reasons. My plan was to let these age for a bit but not sure if I can hold-off. :) Also, will look for The Mascot. Cheers.

Ahh, the elusive Screaming Eagle. Yep, that is the only top tier Napa wine that I don’t have.

meh, you aren’t missing much (it had to be said). It’s far and away the “most enlightening” “blind tasting” wine to surprise people with...(although there are others of course)

you mentioned and already drink several Cali cabs that are usually more enjoyable than screagle.

My wife and I met Heidi Barrett when she first started making wine at Beuhler. She had a newborn at the time.

She is one of my favorites. Haven’t had screaming eagle, but have enjoyed most of her others.

Quick side step. I started my annual spring / summer rose drinking once the 2020 vintage became available. I can recommend Ste. Venture a product of the Bieler family (their primary label is also very good and good value). This wine, from AIX-en-Provence has the customary rose blend from that region. 12.5% alcohol, lovely pale salmon and crisply dry. I'm getting it for about $ 14. Cheers!

Big, big time wine buy. I find myself drinking wine less therefore buying more expensive wine to enjoy when I do. A few years ago I was putting away 3+ bottles a week with friends and sticking to more of the $40-70 a bottle range.

beauty of wine though is there’s no wrong way to do it. I love enjoying the truly special wine that costs $1000 a bottle as much as finding a very good wine for $40.

    A Rioja? Care to share?

I was buying Austin Hope for $240 a case two years ago before a critic gave it 95/100. Nobody had heard of it and couldn’t believe I was getting it for $20. Prob best $20 a bottle wine I ever had.

Had the Dancing Bear tonight…it’s tough to find this one. I was surprised to see it on the menu. Paired with prime aged ribeye and NY strip. Magnifico!
