Two engines gives you much better roll control, too. We knew they would get there eventually, and this is only the upper stage.

Wonder what the margin is for losing engines, i.e. how many can they lose and still meet requirements.

Sorry to be a Debbie Downer, but the view of all those engines brings strong memories of the Soviet N1.

Difference is the Soviets were trying to use differential throttling for directional and roll control. Starship's booster has 9 engines (8 + 1) with gimbals for much more positive control.

Probably a good idea to buy some life insurance before you fly in that monster.

It's going to be a while before anyone flies in it. There will be many test flights, then Starlink satellite delivery missions, maybe a moon orbit/landing demonstration first. Or human orbital flight before moon?

The first Falcon 9 flight was in 2010, then first Crew Dragon (passengers) in 2019. Getting Starship 'human rated' is going to be hard. Right now, I don't think an abort system is planned.
Unacceptable for NASA (and insurance co.)?

BUT, they have massive head start and 'lessons learned' with Falcon 9 / Crew Dragon. Musk has always fast tracked development. Build, fail, fix til they get it right.

I believe Musk first put forth the goal of a cargo mission to Mars in 2022, and a crewed mission in 2024. But he has since pushed those back 2 years. So he plans to launch a crewed mission to Mars in 2026, with the goal of building a permanent human settlement.

    Perhaps something like this ?

Having read Kim Stanley Robinson's Red Mars, Green mars, Blue Mars, I would be surprised if MarsTown were so much out in the open. I would expect much more drilled/blasted into the mountain sides, so less susceptible to strikes.
Yeah, I know, it's just scifi at this point.........:D

'life insurance' is a funny term, as it does nothing for you if you die
