I hope it is appropriate to post this here....

As some of you may know, Vic Elford has had serious heath problems recently, and now he has suffered a fall, significantly complicating his situation.

A Go Fund Me campaign is underway to help Vic and Anita with costs.

If you feel moved to do so, the link to the campaign is

    http://www.gofundme.com/f/assisting-vic-elfords-medical-and-physical-needs

Please note, this campaign was not launched by Vic, but by his many friends.

If you know of others on FChat or elsewhere who don’t frequent this forum but would like to help, please forward the information.

    Thanks.

I think this is fine to post. I also sent out email about this to my group of racer friends this morning. Hoping everyone is generous.

I met Vic at an autograph session at the Monterey Historics in 2009- he signed a 917 Poster for me- the marque for that year.
I said Hello- Didn't you drive the 917 long tail in "Lemans" he smiled and quietly said Yes...

No disrespect to Vic, but I wonder where all his money went. He had a fairly long career and continued working with promotions, books and appearances until recently. Certainly medical costs are expensive, especially for a heavy smoker.

Vic raced sports-racing cars at the highest level in the greatest and deadliest era.
He survived that and now is probably in the last years of his life.

I don’t care if he smokes or has managed his money badly, he won the Targa Florio.

And those drivers were not compensated at anywhere near what they would earn today. As for post-racing income, there are very few from that era like Jackie Stewart, being well compensated as brand ambassadors for Ford, Rolex, etc. Signing posters and making personal appearances pay very little to those pilotes anciens.

Late edit: I meant to add before I lost the WiFi connection that Brian Redman is purported to have said,

“I thought I would die very young or very rich. I was wrong on both counts.”

I think that succinctly sums up the experience of the vast majority of very talented and very brave drivers of that generation.

I’m happy to report that the $150,000 goal has been exceeded and it’s still possible to contribute.

It was an honour for me to interview Vic in person in Florida, some time between 1995 and 98, we did it in his car between Fort Lauderdale and Moroso for a track day and back. He was very precise in his memory and his explanations of car control. He really gave me all he could in terms of memory and concentration, a very special day with one of the all time fastest ones of the greatest era. I wish him Godspeed.

I got to know Vic when he worked at the Shelton brothers’ Land Rover dealership in Fort Lauderdale, and through his wife’s selling books for David Bull, I think it was. I hosted a luncheon for Vic and a few friends at my club in about the same time period. He’s a very modest man yet easy to get to know and very forthcoming.

Vic is a legend. So sad to hear he's in a bad shape, but a guy who drove a 908 at the targa florio won't easily be stopped by a little challenge like cancer.

Check out the ‘Speed Merchants Film‘. I think my copy was on VHS, and the book of the same name.
    Lead me into this world.
Vic reflecting on the death of Jo Bonnier sticks in my memory.
    Hero, pure and simple.
Elford, Redman, Ickx, the sports car guys, the cars , the tracks.....
