So, this was a long time ago, but it's what they were doing. Looks like GAD except with no white lines.
Sorted and nup way to fast for me. It's one of the first day stages Legana perhaps.....hmm they say Paloona,Pat?.The first day used to be a sort of settling in day.
Mate Tassie knows how to grow trees close to the road don't you worry about that! Little perplexed as to what they've called the stage though.
The White boys are very quick, have won the event outright 7 times I think. They were the guys who got airborne on a crest in Rally Tasmania in a Nissan GTR R34, arrived at a t-junction while flying, cleared a fence and ended up several hundred metres into the paddock. The front wheels punched up into the footwells when it landed, breaking the drivers ankle or leg (I can't remember which).
Yeah pretty crappy, you should email Simon Kidston..he'll find some teriffic music to drown out that unsavoury rubbish...
The first day isn’t what it used to be. No more Georgetown. Only the first stage is the controlled stage. After that it’s mayhem as normal. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Georgtown was a day by itself, qualifying so to speak.....back in medieval days. The next day, start of the following 4 was the first day and included the stage I noted. The stage the White's did looks a shipload like it in a lot of places. Unfortunately I've thrown or given all my roadbooks and can't check.
Paloona, one of my favourite stages. What you don't get a sense of from the video is how steep some of those downhill sections are. The bit coming up to Paloona power station (5:30) takes a lot of committment. In my car you could hold it flat in 5th gear through the left kink (probably doing 100kmh less than the lambo). YT can certainly steer pretty well, and doesn't hold much back
They changed the name,as is their wont,I did '94,'96,''98,'99 and '01. Back then it was pretty much the same track year in and out with the addition and subtraction of some on a sort of rotation. The 5 days were also the same and you always ended with the crescendo a being the West Coast from Burnie to Hobart,a little like a big workout with Mt Arrowsmith being the peak then a couple of cooldowns before heading to the finish in Hobart....it was a sort of romantic(if that's the term) notion of the originators,John Large and Max Stahl. It was also the same
Yep, they randomly change the names of stages all the time, that stage has been Devonport and Paloona back and forth a few times. More confusingly they then name a new stage the same as an old stage in a completely different location (eg Sheffield). When I first started the course was pretty much the same. You used to do the North East stages day 2, then have a long drive down the East coast to Hobart, only stay 1 night, then a long drive back up to the North. Then go down to Hobart again day 5. There used to be a lot more town stages too, which have all but disappeared. Georgetown, Longford, Ross, Triabunna, etc.
Just watching that video, personally I think he is well within the car limits & his obvious talent, I didn’t see once any oversteer slide correction or worse any big understeer moments going past an apex. He would have exceptional pace notes, a great navigator & he’s probably driving 8/10ths of his capacity in exceptionally well set up cars. The bad accidents & tragic deaths every year are IMO people who’s skill level is not up to the speeds they’re doing. I remember speaking with Jim Richards about Targa one time & he said be never drove greater than 8/10’s, however his & Whites 8/10’s would be faster than the majority of driver’s down there's 12/10’s. Pro drivers are disciplined enough to keep within their limit, all the weekend warriors sadly, the red mist drops & they exceed their skill level.
Interesting comparison. Here is an in car clip from Matt Close/Cameron Reeves in the GT3 RS on the same stage, the year they won. Man, the porker revs its nuts off Sometimes it doesn't look so fast, and they you look at the speedo
