The final indignity of having an “off” in Targa is 6 months later when you get sent a repair bill for whatever you hit:p

One year I had a very minor off involving a well known bus stop on the Gunns Plains stage. Basically just bumped into it and buckled one end. Car was fine, and after getting a push from some locals, we carried on and finished the rally. Around 6 months later, I get a bill for $2000 for repairs to the bus stop:rolleyes: I could have flow down, gone to bunnings, fixed it myself for around $500:D

Another time in Rallye Burnie, I went into a fence. The farmer sent me a bill for around $150, and it was fully itemised, like 5m barbed wire, 3x star pickets, 20x fence clips etc. Very reasonable compared to the bus stop:)

Edit : I think from memory there is an insurance policy that covers any huge stuff, like the time a lotus demolished a complete shed on a farm

No Chin. The was in another class.
The Volvo in our class had an issue today on stage 2 and lost 2 minutes. We keep looking at the times and keep thinking of what might have been.

The 'pace' notes you're given by the organisers note all the various hazards as SHOULD the professional ones you can purchase,it's up to the crew as to how they interpret those notes.

    That^^^^^^^should have been unnecessary!

Either of the crew didn't take direction.
That is how the first death in TT happened, the driver of a Mazda went around a hardish right hand turn as though it was a bend instead, there is a shipload of difference ..
They were staying at the same hotel we were,it wasn't a good night.

I did Rally Tasmania 3 times. Saw I fatality, a new 911 Turbo reduced to nothing but a roll cage, a Nissan GTR 300 metres into a field after clearing a fence, etc, etc.

If you're on the pace, you'll be airborne many times, regardless of the roadbook or pace notes. By far the bigger hazzard is trees - anything goes wrong, you're likely to hit one.

Circuit racing in comparison is very safe.

    Very true Ian.
We, in comparison, never get air as Pat backs off and we don’t put ourselves into a death defying position. Ever. We figure, we make up time with cornering, not jumping the car.

I admire these rally events, most take them very seriously. I did Targa Tasmania in 1993. It was the first year you had to wear a crash helmet......

As an aside, I'm always amused by the reference to Hans Mezger with these later Porsche vehicles. He retired in 1994, he had nothing to do with road car engine development beyond the 1980s. It's a little like putting a LED globe in the ceiling and thanking Thomas Edison.

Mezger's crowning achievement IMO being the Turbocharged 917, 930/4/5 and the TAG Porsche F1 engine. Does anyone recall that F1 race with Prost and Lauda at Kyalami where they almost lapped the entire field at the engines first outing?

He may have had nothing to do with them after the 80s, but they were all based on his designs until the 996 and even later in the GT3 and Turbo, correct?
