Well, I am the same age today as my dad was when he died - 60 years, 6 months and 19 days. I was looking at my 2 year old grandson asleep on the couch earlier and thinking what a waste the pursuit of money had been for him - for much of the last 15 years of his life he was overseas 300 days a year chasing the big bucks. A global mining empire, all in marginal countries, where coups and revolutions eventually came back to bite him - I will give him this, had a just one of these worked out it would be still champagne and private jets. He did his best to be present ie: most school holidays we would meet him somewhere nice, Egypt, Greece, Iceland and he would be there for a few days then back to Africa, America or the Middle East and we would go on to London to the hotel or later our house. He didn't look after himself, drank too much, smoked too much, didn't exercise and never saw a doctor. More the point, he didn't get to see his kids grow up, didn't know his grand children. I have seen every game of sport my kids ever played, every show my son played in his band. When they had trouble I was there to advise and support them. I guess what I am getting at is that it is great to make money (I've done plenty of that) but you need to look at the consequences for your family - I have 2 sisters who have had many issues growing up with money and being able to ride rough shod over my mother. You need to find balance and importantly, see to your health as I have for the past 15 years - my next goal is to get to 69 and become the oldest male in my family since we arrived with the First Fleet. My grandson is a cheeky little rotter and I want to see him grow up.

Great post John as I am a direct product of what you have just mentioned in a different way. ...I’ve spent my life in hotels missing so much that my family has to offer..I missed spending the time with Dad who we lost earlier than we should have..I’m now sitting in a hotel in HongKong for 2 weeks under mandatory Govt quarantine reflecting on why am I still doing this..The only plus is I’ve started to work on my exit plan which I hope I can execute sooner rather than later..One thing I learnt from Dads passing was everything he thought was important material wise was still around when he was gone...

For most people, most of their lives are a trade off between working for current and future security versus present enjoyment. The more you wish to move the balance towards the present, the less the chance of future benefit.

If you're lucky enough to have a business or profession that you enjoy, you'll probably accept the balance being towards the future.

My dad died at the same age, his mind was as sharp as ever, oil consultant and a butcher at rebuilding engines (if ya can't get the nut off the crankshaft with a hammer and chisel then a proper spanner won't do it )

Miss him every day, passed his age 6 years ago and he gave me a great childhood but his 8 kids probably bought on an early death.

Nobody remembers money, they just end up fighting over it, but if you're lucky your kids will remember you fondly and think about you when you're gone
