    Also - last week, when I was working in the passenger side footwell, I saw that there are the circular vents uner the dash. I've owned the car for 6 years, and this is the first time I knew there were vents down there. I wonder what else I don't know.

    Then you should! The excellent figure of the HVAC system on page 45 clearly shows those vents, and their operation is described on page 44.
