In the early stages of planning extended year end trip to NZ and OZ. Looking for island luxury resort recommendations. Never been to any one them. Planning to stop Hawaii (also first time there) and one or two islands on way to NZ and back from Sydney. My wife and I are not into jet skis, parasailling etc., just first class food and service in a safe and secure spot. Thanks for your guidance, Keith

Dear Pedro. Thanks for your note. No, Covid interrupted our plans. This trip is still in the works, probably for this winter. Pleased to have your suggestions. We do have one friend in NZ who is helping us as well. Thanks, keith

I would love to do the same someday perhaps in a couple of years so I’m interested in what you land in. Never been to Oz or NZ!

    Keith:

Based on your criteria I would strongly suggest you visit Bora Bora on the way to NZ or on the way home.

Stay at either the St. Regis or the Four Seasons…I guarantee you and your wife will love it.

You’ll need to fly to Tahiti then take a short puddle-jumper flight to BB.

There are direct flights from NZ to Tahiti.

Air France flies direct from Tahiti to L.A. in about seven hours.

Tahiti itself is a disappointment in my opinion…just use it as a transfer stop.

    good luck!

Thank you Alan. We are back putting the plan together for this winter. The around the world tickets with the major alliances have some quirks, one of which is if you are going east to west, you can't have any leg that EVEN SLIGHTLY goes west to east. We've had our four shots and hope COVID or whatever calamity might be on the offing stays away. This was supposed to be our 50th wedding anniversary trip we had been planning for two years.

    Keith:

Good luck with the planning of your around-the-worlder…it’s a large part of the fun.

You may already know this but there is a precise definition for a “circumnavigation of the world”:

    - The trip must start and end at the same point,
    - It must generally be in one direction (east or west)…no doubling back and forth,
    - it must cross the Equator,
    - it must be over 26,000 miles,
    - it must pass through at least one pair of antipodes (opposite points on the globe).

My wife and I did this over 100 days during the Winter of 2014-2015. Our 6-day stop in Bora Bora was at the tail end of the trip and served as the final pitstop where we could rest our weary bones.

We are now planning our second circumnavigation in 2023.

I’ll be happy to try to answer any questions that you may have.

    good luck!
    Alan

    Not going to write a story here so in a few words of the islands worth seeing (in my opinion);
Hawaii - commercial but worth a look
    Tahiti - expensive and pretty
Bora Bora - expensive and beautiful
Easter Island - quiet but interesting
New Caledonia - french flavour but worth the effort to visit
    Fiji - friendly people, quiet
Yap - excellent if you dive, quiet
Palau - extremely beautiful and was very quiet last time there some years back
Of course there are many other islands. The Pacific is huge.
