opened a nice bottle of brunello last night and it was noticeably brown in color (it was only a 2015).

Wife comes in (self-admittedly not a wine person) and I ask her to taste it and she says; "hmmm...tastes like a Madeira".

Yup, she nailed it...this wine was sadly badly oxidized.

Down the drain it went. (did I mention wine is a minefield? Oh yeah, I did.)

Went to a back-up cheapo Bordeaux and it was good...and arguable a better match with the rack of lamb anyways.

The special selection is on-point. The 2016 is a 100 point wine.

Opus does it right. The gave me an allocation on these 2008s and 2013s. 2013 is a 100 point wine; last time the received 100 points was back in the 1980s if I recall.

Mascot is tough to find. Made from younger Harlan and Bond vines. It’s excellent. If you can get it, do it. Many of these vineyards were burnt due to the recent fires. These Napa wines will become increasingly scarce and price will go up significantly.

I have the same decanter. I really should use it more often (and I do when having guests for a nice meal), but it’s a pain to clean.

Totally agree. Mine has wine stains (somehow) on the inside and I can't get inside to clean them out. Despite how long hot soapy water sits inside it never totally cleans.

I use uncooked rice to clean mine if there is residue. Swirl it around in there and it works like a champ.

A sommelier I spoke with recommended coarse salt or the ceramic scouring beads (it's what I use - they work great) that you can find online. She said to never use soap inside a decanter as it will eventually haze from soap reside. Soap on the exterior of the decanter is fine.

Thanks for the tip! Do you just pour the salt inside and swirl it around dry before rinsing it out?

    Also, welcome to FerrariChat! :)

    All the best,
    Andrew.

Thanks! My first post and it has to be about liquor. No Ferrari yet but I'm looking.

That's what I do. I tried coarse salt and water a couple of times but then found the ceramic beads. They work much better than the salt. Add a little water and the beads to the decanter and swirl away. With the beads there's no risk of contaminating the container and affecting the wine if you don't rinse thoroughly.

We drank a 2017 Ch. Montelena last night and it was tasty. I don't drink a lot of Cali Cabs, but this guy was a good match to the lamb chops. I think I have a bottle or two of some older Montelena somewhere.

That 2016 Dominus is delicious. I have the RWT in the cellar, but haven’t tried it yet. I hear it is very good as well.

Just added these to the cellar. All 100 point wines. I’m really looking forward to tasting the CLR though.

Did I tell you guys how insane this wine is?

If you find it, buy it. Retail is $75, I’ve been getting it for $55. It’s probably comparable to wines in the $125 range.

    The 2016 is award winning.

If you can’t find any, let me know and I’ll connect you.

    You won’t be disappointed.

Would it be considered hi-jacking this thread if we all posted rose recommendations here in addition to the reds? Summer is coming and the 2020 vintage is starting to appear on shelves. Thanks

Didn't read the entire thread, but Caymus, Dominus, Stag's Leap all great Cabs.

Viticcio Chianti Classico Riserva is an outstanding Chianti.
