    I don't think you can get gas in our area without ethanol anymore. Since MTBE was banned, ethanol is required by law.

    Incorrect. Ethanol free is avail in many parts of the country. I think the closest to you will be:
    Helms Service Station & Body Shop
    408 West Harford Street (Rte.6), Milford, PA; ethanol-free GULF 87 89 91;

    If anyone is located on the North Shore, Automotive Technology In Huntington Village now has ethanol-free gas. The station is owned by Alex, a former Braden Ferrari mechanic and I highly recommend him for any service needs also. He's located on Spring Street, just south 25A by Heckscher Pond Park.

    Does ethanol free just mean higher octane?

    How much of a difference over conventional fuel can be expected?

    Ethanol is a biofuel additive for gasoline to help reduce emissions. However Ethanol alcohol is referred to as hygroscopic, which means it absorbs moisture. If ethanol remains in your car's fuel system for an extended period, it draws water from the tank, upsetting your car's fuel mix and gumming up the system. This can cause major damage to more than just your engine.

    This is great news as I never like ethanol for my weekend cars! Which grade octane do you guys recommend? Do we need the 100, or is 93 just fine if it’s a stock car? Also, I’m wondering how many people use this gas station due to the much higher cost for ethanol free gas. Do we think there is any issue of getting old gas here?

    Thanks!

    I think the 93 is fine for a stock car. The 100 is for the more hardcore performance cars. I do use the 100 for my motocross bikes though. The shop is really not on a main road and didn't do much gas business, so the why Alex switched to the non-ethanol gas... to cater to the specialty crowd. He has quite a few customers that prefer the non-ethanol fuel, and with word getting around town, I don't think the gas will be sitting there too long getting old.

    Silly question here... how do we know that there is truthfully no ethanol, or water for that matter, in the expensive gas. I don't mind paying but also don't want to be scammed. The doubting New Yorker in me wants to know.

    You can do some simple tests to check:

    Also, gasoline is dyed with colors to differential the grades. Not sure what colors are used today, but if you take a sample of each type, you'll see a difference.

    I can tell you that I've run 100 octane in my MX bike and '64 Jag and felt a difference.

    You'll get better mileage with ethanol free gas as well. I picked up 3-4 mpg in my modern Jag but PA is a long ways to go for gas LOL! It was 50 cents more per gallon so no racing fuel expensive!
