I just did a check: there is no difference in the light pattern between flasher and fog light. There is absolutely no effect in using the flashers while the fog lights are on. An oncoming driver would have no clue you were flashing him.

Incidentally, the 456M operation manual at page L-9, has a diagram identifying item F as "Foglight and Daytime Flasher." I guess there is no circumstance where you would need to flash someone to lower their lights when you were in a fog.

As far as the rear lights are concerned, switching on the fog lights is like having the parking lights on or driving with your headlights raised. The outside rear lights are illuminated as they'd be if you were driving at night.

Yes, there were little concerns. The main problem is not only the light intensity rather the lens, the light shines too high for all traffic participants. Therefore if I would like to use the daytime flasher as a daylight I have to install another headlamp including diffuser. With such a change I loose the legally prescribed daytime flasher functionality. For me not a proper solution.

Yes, we will install the AEG light into the grill.

    Thanks guys!
Daniel: I see - interesting that US cars have flasher and fog light capacity. I assume they have different beam/diffuser...probably also explains different partnumbers for US and Euro lights, too. At this stage I am inclined getting US lights and hook them up to fog switch and indicator lever...

Would these 90mm round DRLs from Hella be of any use?

Original New Hella LED Daytime Running Lights Universal Set 90 mm Round Eazy | eBay

If you could replace the OEM flashers with these units and leave the original wiring in place so that you could flash them on if you wanted to, you might be able to wire up a parallel feed so that they could be switched on to run as DRLs when you wanted to...

If you then wanted to flash someone, you could flash them off(!) with your new switch or, if you were clever enough, wire them so that the stalk flashed them off. The last thing would be to remember to switch them off (or dim them?) when the headlights come on as I believe that the regs state that DRLs are for daytime use only (or come up with some crafty wiring solution that would automate this). :)

P.S. I saw a beautiful blue 456M near Geneva recently and noticed that it was driven without any lights on and thought that the driver was running a small risk of being sanctioned but at least he did have diplomatic plates, so perhaps that was his defense!

Great input MogulBoy, thx, I will check your approach with my Ferrari garage.

E few days ago I did also a short trip with my 456M, unfortunately I forgot to switch on the light. This can happen also without diplomatic plates... ;)

Today my Ferrari specialist has installed the daytime headlights (AEG LED Daytime Running Lights LS*18). IMO not the worst solution; fully legally compliant, the components were just fixed with tape and cable retainers, the look is ok - yes, I'm happy!

Can you exit the car with the stalk still turned 1 turn and the fog lamp button down ?

    No battery draw ?

Not the stalk just the toggle switch in the center console. I always leave my switch on so the moment I start her up "daylights" are on. I haven't had any issues with battery draw, I don't even use the tender just starts up everytime.

The toggle switch does not turn on the lamps without turning the stalk one turn...right ?

Correct. For some reason, cars fitted with rear fogs require two clicks (Low beams).

Further clarification... The fog light switch has no power going to it until the "outside light" relay has been energised (with one click of the stalk switch)
