As a hopefully soon to be TR rookie, I figured I'd add my questions here:

I'm more of a DIY mechanic, where is a good place a to find parts for the engine out service? Water pump, timing belt, etc?

I saw someone mention getting a differential, where is a place to source one?

Fair point! On other forms I leave that blank, but I just updated my profile for here. Knowing I'm in the USA does help since I'm asking about parts.

Depends on the part! I scour the internet and look for good prices and reputation of the business. Some parts can be ordered from NAPA and Orielly even. Some parts really should be OEM and pay the ferrari tax, some are good to use the repro jobs that are cheaper. Some parts I buy used on eBay. Some parts I made myself.

    Here is my take:

Brake pads are cheaper than clutches:
Use brakes to slow your car down, not your gear box (unless towing down a grade). Go to neutral as you slow rather than a lower gear.

    Clutches are cheaper than synchros:
Double clutch to align gears rather than using synchros.

    Synchros are cheaper than gears:
When hurried, don’t shift faster than a synchro can accommodate.

I order regularly from Eurospares and ship to the US. It's still cheaper for the most part than dealer pricing.

For the engine out service I recommend the kit from Daniel at Ricambi. He puts everything you need in one package. He's a good resource as well.

The kits are good, but still a starting point. Things like exhaust check valves and hoses etc should be added.

Wow, thats a lot of great responses in just one day! The rumors about how helpful this forum is seems to be true. That's a great starting point all this info, I read write ups that say "$2k" for parts for an engine out service, but I feel better actually finding the parts on websites and seeing the prices.

Clyde Romero, I don't own a TR (yet, hopefully this summer I will). I'm just trying to do a bit of homework before I get into one and get burned by the cost it, so I dont have a need for a differential (and hope to never actually need one).

Do the homework on recent service. A PPI and test drive are also recommended. There will still be little surprises, so budget accordingly. These cars are 30+ years old!

When the car is cold don’t shift into 2nd until the gearbox is warmed up just skip to third. You won’t have any problems then. This won’t take long either. Likely just a couple of shifts to third then you will be fine. My mechanic said this is the best method and I agree.

    Thanks for all the tips!

Got another new question: as I am looking at cars, should I be worried about the pre-88 cars that have spline wheels vs. cars with lug nuts? Are the consumables, like wheel bearings, etc easily found for both? All my cars have 5 lug wheels, so I'm wondering if buying a TR with the spline wheels a disadvantage. I understand buying actual wheels should be easier as 5 lug, but I'm mostly worries about the maintenance cost between the two.

Early TRs with lug nuts had TRX (metric) tires. The TRX size for the rear is NLA. Replacement imperial wheels can be found (16'').

Otherwise the early cars don't have significant/costly differences to the later TRs.

A 512TR however is a different car altogether with over 100 improvements to the initial TR which -in the eyes of some- justifys the hefty price increment.

Good advice. Maybe you can shift to Red Line NS oil for your gear box and it may make things a lot better. Mine goes into second fine now when cold but at any event, don't force it. Follow the 1st to 3rd as outlined. Enjoy!
