    Historic plates on my F40...
Car qualifies > 25 yrs. old
Had to do a smog still - I believe smog exempt in CA is 30 years? Just missed it since mine is 1992.
Registration went from around $8k to $80

In CA smog exemption was to be on older than 25 years with an annual rollback. But this seized and currently only pre-1975 vehicles are SMG exempt. I think Arnold Schwarzenegger, while being the governator, wanted the rollback to continue but this somehow wasn’t passed...bummer.

That's too bad the historic plate loophole closed. I used to run a '79 around on those plates in So Cal purely for the no-smog benefit. Have since moved to WA and couldn't be happier with no smog or income tax.

    Technically pre ‘76 in CA.

My 1975 Laguna is smog exempt.

    My ‘92 diesel Ford also smog exempt...for diesel it’s 1996 or 1997.

There's a reason owners of multi-million dollar cars try to go the Montana LLC route. I think that's illegal so going with CA historic plates was a totally valid and cheap way to go.
