    I think the oval pipe pipe Ferrari used all started from round pipe being pulled through a cold draw matrices. That is the exact same process Proformance metal uses today. This might be why some of the original oval pipe circumference fits standards round pipe size's.

    What's the benefit of the oval/ellipse tubing over round?

    Directional strength? Slightly more clearance?

    Inquiring minds and all that...

    My guess is it acts like an I-beam for directional strength like you say. It must have been an advanced concept at the time.

    I know of a aircraft kit manufacturer that produces oval aluminum tube by placing standard round tube in a press and compressing it to a preset stop to make it oval. If the circumference of the factory oval tube is the same as round this could be the method used.
