My speedo has become intermittently working. Now it goes up & down in speed. Is this some kind of connection/relay type of issue you think? Is a fairly simple fix that my local mechanic can do, or shall I take it to a specialist?

11 out of every 10 times, it's the speedo sender which is jammed into the drivers sider of the gearbox. Part 116987

On the 13th time, its the speedo head itself. :)

Depends on whether or not you have arms smaller than Baby Yoda.

If it's like the F355, there are a few ways to skin a cat...
Go from underneath the car or ..
Remove the left rear wheel and wheelwell liner
Create a special socket to go over the sensor and harness (if the sensor is too tight for an open end spanner).

Test the sensor using various methods and replace as required. Repair it if you have the skills.

Your car will probably have a Type II sensor

I made a heat shield jacket for my new one years back. Just some header tape and aluminum insulation tape. When you see where it sits so close to the exhaust you will see it makes sense. Just wrap it around and tape it. Cheap insurance, replace if it comes loose. Works great for Exhaust ecus too. I made a set for my 360. Fold up and bolt in underneath.
