Just what the city needs: More sky scrapers and more apartments. Nott. The pandemic caused many people to leave downtown. Many apartments and tons of office space are vacated and for rent. Tribune recently had an article about the Chicago real estate market about to take a dive with the over supply of space and a real lack of demand.

I appreciate the beauty of the architecture and don't mean to rain on your thread but boy, I don't understand any developer trying to build another sky scraper in this economic climate.

I think they are planning on the future rebound and stimulus from the government. It takes several years to complete these projects. Also the Dems got in so they are happy now. That should make for less rioting in the big cities as most of the looters were democrats. Like it or not that is a fact.

Another skyscraper going up right next to the Dan Ryan expressway(on the right in photo). Sad to report Tcar who followed architecture passed away from Covid 19 last month. Not from Chicago, he did follow this thread.

Slight redesign for 1000M Michigan Avenue already under construction. Old and the new cleaner but shorter design. Should be interesting when completed as it gets alot wider as it goes up. 805 feet tall is not to bad especially in the southeast Loop.

Another new one.... Amazing but true, 47 and 40 floors.

Pacific Reach Properties proposes to construct a new development at 601 West Monroe Street. The site is currently a surface parking lot, adjacent to Heritage Green Park. The proposed Planned Development includes two towers, 47 and 40 stories respectively.

As proposed, the east tower contains approximately 537 apartments, 23,405 square feet of retail space, and 397 parking spaces; the west tower consists of approximately 516 apartments, 6,904 square feet of retail space, and an additional 33 parking spaces within the garage.

The west tower becomes the backdrop to the 50,000 square foot public park, Heritage Green Park. Alderman Reilly encouraged the developer to add over 30,000 square feet of retail adjacent to the Park and Monroe, Jefferson and Desplaines streets to encourage pedestrian activity along the entire building perimeter. The first and second floors of the west building directly adjacent to the park will be planned for a food and beverage tenant; this active use will provide additional security to this important neighborhood amenity.

Great to see this old building will be restored...

"Community Development Commission approves $5.5M in TIF in support of the redevelopment of the former Armour Building, 3300 S. Federal St. The $26.8M plan will restore the landmark building, vacant since 2012, creating 20 affordable units and 82 market rate units."

Yep, and it's sad but Europeans when they visit Chicago appreciate it more than Americans even in it's present condition.

Planning Commission approved a 47-story, 413-unit development at 640 W. Washington Blvd. in the west loop. The developer of the $200M project will provide 10 affordable units on site.

Both these projects are right next to the Dan Ryan Expressway.

Taken this week by Barry Butler. 6 supertalls in the photo. Hope Chicago gets another one soon(Tribune Tower). NYC is killing it right now with new supertalls, although most are toothpicks. Must be interesting when it gets windy up on the top floors even with dampers.

Most big cities keep growing in their downtowns, and NYC along with Chicago are no different. You should look and see what other countries are doing. China has hundreds of tall towers going up as fast as they can build them. The US is no longer the leader and won't be the leader in anything if things don't change. We screwed up and continue to. I do think NYC has overbuilt and that will begin to show in a few years. I hope Chicago has not also, but the Chicago numbers are much lower for available top end condos.
