I am preparing for my first oil change on my 1978 Euro GTB. But the dry sump system is new to me. I assume I can't get all the oil out with just removing the oil plug in the sump, right ? There should not be much oil in there ? So I guess that I have to drain the oil from the tank and maybe drain the cooler too? I am on thin ice here..... Much of the oil in the tank will eventually end up in the sump when left parked. Don't over think it. Drain the tank, drain the sump, put a new filter on it and refill it.
Just did this a couple of weeks ago. Relatively simple process, unfortunately the tank drain sits above a section of the frame. The frame will need to be cleaned up afterwards or you will have drips on your garage floor.
There will be just as much oil in the sump as there is in the tank. No need to drain the cooler. Not sure how you would do this anyway.
Thanks. Regarding the cooler, I would just remove one of the hoses. Sent from my SM-A505FN using FerrariChat.com mobile app
Thanks for your input. I have oil, filter, crushwasher etc - So now I am ready Thanks Image Unavailable, Please Login Sent from my SM-A505FN using FerrariChat.com mobile app
Be very careful when removing these hoses as the oil cooler threads can be extremely tight and easily suffer damage to the cooler if excessive force is used.
I wasn't sure if it was needed to drain the cooler too. But I think I will just drain the sump and the oiltank. Sent from my SM-A505FN using FerrariChat.com mobile app
The factory did that. Typically when we took those off they got cut off. We chose which was cheaper at the time and destroyed that part. Like I said, not rocket science. The OP should just do it the way the factory intended and be done with it. There is a reason for everything we do so reinventing it is a really bad idea.
The oil cooler is $350, the hose is $300 (each). Destruction of one or the other is 1 in 2 possibility. I would not touch either one just for an oil change. You get ... another cup of oil, maybe.
Oil cooler draining reminds me of a guy I knew that would drain his oil, pull the coil wire off the top of the distributor (not a Ferrari) and then turn the engine over a few times with the key to "get the rest out" I've never seen anyone drain an oil cooler but I have seen that.
And then, back in the 80's when the Honda CRX was new, my boss bought one (it was cheap) and drove it without changing the oil at all until it stopped at more than 100k miles. He said, car was cheap, why bother.
Brilliant, I have the nearly identical car as Heine here, and used to make a mess for years. I'll start using the suction machine (it was great for my BMW 325xi that required removing the under engine cover) Makes so much sense on a dry sump (now, what oil do I use...JK!!!)
Do yourself a favour and leave the oil cooler alone. Only bad things can happen and there is zero benefit for draining this oil anyway.
