Fantastic job by George. So close to Bottas with a so uncomfortable seating position. Talk a lot about his driving skills.
Bottas is that close to LH. Says that Bottas is faster than George today. Not sure what you should prove overall. Bottas was faster and Bottas is that close to LH. Russell is slower than Bottas and would be slower than LH as well.
As expected Russell did not beat Bottas. On a longer track the difference would have been more obvious. And of course Lewis would have beaten Bottas by even more. As expected Fittipaldi got beaten big time by KMag, who isn't that great to begin with. Not expecting Fittipaldi to have an extended career in F1. Happy for Stroll to make it to Q3. He would have done the same thing last week if the team had given him the proper tires in Q2. Incredible run by Leclerc.
Boom. And now we know. Russell outperforms expectations and puts in a great quali. So close to Bot in a car that he doesn’t know, that doesn’t fit and with tiny shoes. Very impressive. And listening to his interview was again impressive. He has the pace and is definitely intelligent enough. I think he could beat Bot in the race. By definition that means he could possibly win the GP. Can’t wait! Also, shout out for Leclerc. Brilliant lap in the POS Ferrari. Awesome.
Bro...Russell to come that close on race day 1 is nuts...from never scoring a single WDC point...wingman bottas is mediocre at best, he has had years of familiarity w that car and the processes. 0.026s holycow. If it was a bigger gap then I’d say nothing to see here, but there’s hardly anything between them!!!
Russell is closer to Bottas than Stroll is to Perez given it's Russell's first time qualifying in a W11. Also, Russell drives a backmarker car.
Wait, you really believe that it's easy to move from a crap Williams and then extract the maximum in Mercedes after just 3 practice sessions?!? Russell just proved that HE IS CLEARLY better than Bottas. Fittipaldi was only 0.32s from KMAG on FP3 but unfortunately didn't do well at qualy. Still, very unfair to judge him with no experience and KMAG racing for many years. Stroll shows once again how far he is from Perez. PS: funny how you judge drivers so differently.
He drives a Williams powered by Mercedes. Has tested Mercedes. A significant advantage over others. He did well and was expected to do so. Just ask Toto. Hence the choice of Russell to replace LH. Russell doing well is not news. Simple confirmation of his known skill. He would have scored points but lost it behind the safety car. Oops. Non Bottas fans can rest easy as Russell did not disappoint. He will be in a Williams next year. So Russell will gain more experience. Toto is not ready to move him up and stated so yesterday, assuming other drivers are not in the frame which they will be. The start will be key and Max will draft off Bottas. Russell is lucky that Bottas start not so well. A clean start could see Russell in the lead!
yes, but I have a feeling LeClerc or Max would be on pole if they were in Hamilton’s car. Not a great lap by Bottas, but great result for Russell as he’s not normally battling at the front of the grid. Not certain what to expect in the race. Expectations will be weighty for the Mercs (Bottas must beat GR, but GR needs to prove himself in a top car). Max will be there to pounce on any mistake...would be great to see Charles there also but he doesn’t have the car. Phenomenal qualifying effort though.
Max will race this severely. Yas will be the test for GR to Bottas. I could see GR faster. Mercedes groomed him well.
Remember,George has driven the car for 2 days, is in a car that fits someone 5 inches smaller than him and has to wear a size down shoe from his normal size(11). Give George a comfortable car and a few more weeks.
Agree'd. But this system is not new to him nor his driving it. He has tested and shown in test close time to Bottas. Hence Toto selecting him. His known skill was confirmed. I am not one to be amazed with known capability. Norris is similar. He gets more out of the Mclaren than is possible at times.
And your point is? Russell is a future WDC in the making. He'll take the baton over from Lewis. I'm not surprised he got close to Bottas but he didn't beat him. As for the backmarker car comment: Stroll scored a podium with that car. Russell has zero points with it. Perez is becoming a non entity within 2 GPs.
The most grand terrific wonderful enjoyable spectacular part is that there were no corn rows or talk of him.
