These kinds of redesigns are always horrible, because they are purely esthetic and do not consider the package. All truly beautiful designs are the most elegant envelope of the technical package that is the complete car. The "reason" of the design is lost, and it quickly deteriorates in becoming an ugly bodykit.

He should know better, there is no possible outcome of an exercise like this where the result would be: "This is how the F40 should have left the factory!"

Going just by front ends ahead of the front wheel well, the red car looks like a new C8 Corvette and the orange car looks like the 1990s NSX.

the p4/5 was better than the enzo in a number of ways imo
270kg lighter is nuts and makes you wonder how come ferrari couldn't reduce the weight to this extent!

am a big fan of stephenson but not a big fan of this redo.

the f40 is what it is. the only changes that look right to me are the ones on the LM.

It seems a lot of these figurehead designers actually need a team around them to keep them from straying to far, Ian Callum appears to be the same, when they go solo the end results are not that great.

agreed. but more than the team, they kind of need the bean counters and management to define the borderlines for them.
and then the best designs come back from those who are not too strictly limited, but that can work within the imposed limitations.
i think stephenson is one of the best, and he has shown that not only with the 430 or the 12c, but also with the relatively mundane tasks of the new mini and new fiat 500.

but then as you say, if he is unleashed without the limitations of cost, realistic building limits, and required sales......it kind of goes off the rails.
and he might even be willing to admit that - since he seems like a deep thinking individual who probably knows himself pretty well.

The initial BMW Mini is a design classic just as much as the original was, it is just so right even today when you compare it to the awful bloated thing it has now become.

Frank Stephenson worked under Chris Bangle at BMW, that could explain a lot! Bangle is behind a long list of hideously ugly cars, especially while at BMW.

What problems do you have with the F40? Guys! She fills design books. In the atlases of Design. With her naca sockets. With her unmistakable styles.

    That's okay. Save F40.

And by the way, I hope Ferrari doesn't do any ICONA based on the F40 either.

Look into the future, and leave the perfect icons of the past untouched.

I like that building's mixed style. Is it real? There is a residential house near me that is a big brick colonial that got renovated with a steel and glass cube addition. Looks great juxtaposing classic and modern.

It is actually very cool indeed. As it is a porthouse (located in the harbor of course), it remains the only old building in a very scruffy, industrial dock-area. So the addition of the glass structure really elevates it, rather than letting it be an old building looking like it's the only one which has not been torn down. The glass structure mimicks a ship & can be seen from the main highway going around the city, making it seem like a ship is floating at the horizon.
