The original is automotive art which ought not be vandalized.

None of these renderings have any redeeming qualities and only seem to ruin the original icon, meanwhile for the designers involved, this seems to be time misspent which could be put towards a new or original creation.

Perhaps it's motivated by my view that the original is sacred, I think others feel the same way.

Stephenson sketch is awful. He just pimped an F40 as if he was being paid to add wings and vents.

I feel the same way too but we’re not talking about vandalising an existing F40, just pay homage to the design with a reinterpretation. Same as p4/5 or the new lancia stratos. I’d love that if it was made properly

The P4/5 is very well done as is the new Stratos. However, those were based on cars from the 60s and 70s and had enough time gap to allow a nice homage to be designed. IMO the F40 is too modern/recent still to have that done well. Maybe in 10 years when it's closer to 40 (edit: from time of production cessation).

Frank Stephenson have definitely lost his way, did this happen before, during or - less likely - after his stint at McLaren?

His sketch is hideous and childish. Seems out of character for someone who reveres the F40 as he claims. I am embarrassed for him.

For me the only interesting alteration to the F40 body would be to custom build a rear hood without wing.

100% reversible, and gives the F40 a fabulous look (I hate the F40 wing, far too squarrish, looks like a thing straight out from a kid toy)

A kind of 80's enzo. Love it

Yes, except that he has vandalized it with a very amateurish rendition, whereas, the P4/5 and Stratos look like thoughtful tributes redesigned by professionals.

It's about both form & function, the F40's wing is an important functional part of the car without which the car would lose stability at any speed above 75 mph, to remove the wing is to remove more half it's performance, pretty pointless.

My thought would be to start with an F8, straighten out the edges of the nose like sketch monkey suggested, then add louvers to the fenders and a mega wing in the back.

Not all supercars have it... and they are not uncontrollable above 75 mph. Anyway it was all about the look. Many F40 owners drive those cars very quitely, when they ever drive them

That's because they were originally designed and aerodynamically tested without a rear wing, and obtain the necessary downforce from other areas on the car's bodywork and under-tray, there is a science to this, it's not simply about the 'the look'.

You can't expect a car that requires a rear wing for stability to be stable without it, and owning an F40 that you have to drive slowly is redundant.

If, say Pinifarina, did a tribute, that might give a redesign some meaning or purpose, and perhaps then it would also actually be aesthetically pleasing, IMO.
