Last week, after coming off track, I noticed a metallic ringing noise. Upon investigation, it sounds like its coming from under the front timing cover. Certainly the front of the motor, and not under the cam covers.

I ran it while up in the air on jackstands hoping something obvious and easy like an alternator pulley bearing down low, but it seems higher and more centralized.

I cant seem to upload .mov files on here, but can send the file to anyone who thinks they can help identify the noise while I wait for a service spot to open at my mechanic.

Any noise from the timing belt area is to be investigated immediately. I wonder if a pulley fence has come loose.

I had the main A/C front bearing making a similar sound especially when cold before engine warm up.

I'll make a more thorough visual inspection tonight and check that area out. Thanks.

Wow, that is weird. Sort of sounds like one of those medieval alarm clocks where spinning weights ring the bell. Start at 18:00. (Couldn't find on youtube with a direct link). Makes me wonder if something is flailing about off something spinning and the ringing you hear is it hitting whatever.

Oil level fine first of all? could be exhaust/cats... It sounds like a highspeed rattle/knock like a bearing cage or chain related. Could be oil pump, reminds me of mechanical a pump sound actually. I would suspect the timing chain or very possibly the oil pump chain tensioner part 169596 there was a 360 update as the oem ones tended to rattle over time. Never heard one so not sure what it sounds like. Let's hope there is a simpler answer than those I posed.

I agree on bearing or chain-related if it's you've isolated to the front of the engine. It's almost like something has come out of tolerance and is rubbing....like a vintage metal desk fan on it's cage...

Are you sure thats not one of the crank angle sensors rubbing on the pulley? Get your feeler gauges out and see if you have some clearance there...check if they are tight.

I'll take a look at the crank sensor positioning. A good suggestion. Not sure of anything at this point!

It's definitely front of the engine outside of the long block assembly.

Oil level is good, and oil is good. When tracking, I keep it closer to the 'MAX' line on the dipstick in the sump tank, and check it frequently. Oil is clean and clear.

Water pump was replaced three years ago as part of major. Ultimately, since we just had our first snow here and car was going to go in for annual service shortly anyway, it will go to the mechanic for full diagnosis and proper repair of whatever it is. If the motor has to come out, i'll just do the next major two years early since i'm already paying for the labor to pull it out. Car has more track miles then street miles since the last major, and has always run flawlessly.

For those who regularly track their 348's, and really drive them hard on track, have you changed your intervals between majors at all?

    Jason,

My F355 Challenge gets a major service every four years. It's on the track ~15 days per year at WGI, LRP, Daytona and Sebring. Oil and filter change and brake fluid before each event. Gearbox oil changed before the first event of the season.

Sounds like a bearing. Could be a number of things. I like mechanic's stethescopes. High frequency noises can really fool you especially as you get more high freq deaf as you age.
